Show no third fany some ot the bryan republican papers talk of a new alignment of parties at the national election in 1900 because they are oat of all parties and are looking through a green glass the world looks green to them the history of all bolts and third party movements in this country should be refutation enough of such ideas when has any third party in this country grown to prominence during tha life of the two great parties the latter have adjusted their platforms to suit all new questions and it will ever be so in 1888 and 1892 the tariff question was the all absorbing question last year it was still an issue but the primary one was really the financial question and it is resolved itself to this shall we adopt free coinage of silver independently or ask for the cooperation of other leading civilized nations if now the cooperation of other countries cannot bo obtained then tho financial issue will be still more narrowed down and it will be free coinage of silver versus the present standard we believe however that the efforts of the present administration for international bimetallism will be successful the condition seems to be ripe in europe for full recognition of tho white metal but the point we want to make is that no third party can ever hope to settle the financial question in this country it will be settled by one or the other of alie present parties they have BO far been able to cover both sides of every question and they will continue to do so they are in a shape DOW to settle the silver question in the only possible manner that it can be settled what can any new parties add to the present positions of the parties we might enumerate a score or more new parties that have bolted the old parties lived an ephemeral life and then decayed while the old parties have gone on shaping the destiny of our republic it will ever be so for it seems to be in the economy of all modern government two leading parties form the means of political contests in all the governments of europe utah people will realize the force of these well established conditions anil take sides with one or the other of the established parties they are sacking to become a ruling factor in national politics and it is predicted destiny to some day attain that position their ideal can never be reached by bolting the old parties and they should not be led into such ft trap they were for more than a generation a distinct third party in utah and simply succeeded in bringing upon themselves the animosities and persecutions of both parties one seemed to endeavor to out kierod the other then the people of utah took sides with the leading parties and all ceased while bogli of the great parties did all in power to court the favor of the people of utah it proved division on party lines was the proper thing now when any one talks third party to the of utah they put liim down as an enemy to the peoples interest |
