Show 11 I Expedition to Arctic in Scientific Interests I rr r r s m I IhAI7iI1 rlL 1 f l J Lcfllngwcll and Mlkkclscns expedition expe-dition to the arctic seas In search of undiscovered lands and for tho purposes pur-poses of study of geography geology and other fields of scientific interest Is expected by professors at the University Uni-versity of Chicago to result In more real benefit to science than a dash In search of tho north pole Both men have figured on trips to find tho pole and believe that undertaking Is unattainable Among tho various things which Loilingwcll and Mikkelscn will attempt at-tempt to study are tho history of the Eskimos the geography of the frozen north the hydrography meteorology and the temperature and climatic conditions of the new lands Our trip Is In the Interests of science sci-ence first of all and we do not Intend to go north merely for the purpose of planting the American flag on an unknown land said Ernest D Lef flngwell in discussing the contemplated contemplat-ed Journey There Is an abundance of land there which any ono could have and which to my knowledge Is not of much money value My special work will bo the study of the geology of tho country which exists there I am practically certain Whalers and Eskimos driven out of their course by storms have reported that a body of land was there Tho character of the land Is not like that of Greenland It Is not covered with glaciers Tho amount of precipitation precipita-tion is not sufficient I believe to cause snow fields It must bo for tho most part a desolate country of wastes of bare rock with little vegetation growing Perhaps wo may find a little moss There surely Is however plenty of game MusUoxen and reindeer exist there I am sure Our chances of getting to the country coun-try are good Every summer there Is open water In the proximity Whalers have cruised near In the summer Considerable Con-siderable copper has been reported there and we will make a study of the ore I do not know whether tho land Is made up of Islands or Is another continent con-tinent There Is plenty of room for a seventh continent but I doubt if such exists It is my impression although I have practically nothing to base my belief on that there are a number of Islands rather than a continent |
