Show ORCHARD MAKES FULL CONFESSION f Admits Assassination of Ex = Governor Steunenbcrg of Idaho Implicates All Those Now Under Arrest Ar-rest and Others Including J L SimpkinsTells the Story of I Twentysix Murders as Result of Conspiracies Boise IdahoGovernor Gooding on Sunday night Issued a statement with respect to tho Stounenberg assassina Ion case In which he says I want to state officially that Harry Orchard has made a full confession as to the manner and motive of the assassination as-sassination of exCtOvrrnor Steunen berg telling of the plans made and giving the names of those making hornTho Tho assassination of exGovernor Steunenberg which occurred at his own gate on the evening of December 30th 1905 was tho third attempt that Orchard made against his life This confession was made to Captain Cap-tain James McParland It Included a history of his life from his early boyhood boy-hood up to the tlmo of his arrest In that confession Orchard Implicated all those under arrest and others including Includ-Ing J L Slmpklns He told the story of twentysix murders the results of conspiracies In which all the accused parties were Interested When this story Is given to the public I believe It will bo tho greatest narrative of prime which tho world knows There has never been any doubt as to tho truth of Orchards confos I sion among those who are familiar v th tho crimes committed In Idaho and Colorado and charged to tho Inner circle of the Western Federation of Miners I attribute Orchards confession confes-sion to the great brain of James Mc Parland who has been employed by the state to run down the murderers of exGovernor Stounenberg I have seen Orchard myself since this confession con-fession was made Ho told me that no pronllses of clemency or reward dad been held out to him by McPar land or anyone else Mr McParland was aided In his work by Orchards parly training In his boyhood tho bible was read night and morning by his parents Tho Impression of tho early days camo up and smote his conscience when ho was brought face to face with his God He told me that he believed In a Supreme Being and a hereafter and that now his one thought was to make his peace with his Maker The finding of tho bomb at Judge Goddards gate and many other things which will later be mado known at tho trial have proved the truthfulness of Orchards confession beyond all question to those familiar with his story The state desires to secure justice There Is no thought of punishing the Innocent or waging war on any labor organization Tho assassination as-sassination of exGovernor Steunen borg a grave crime against the state of Idaho was committed As Its executive ex-ecutive I felt it my duty to bend every energy toward the discovery of tho guilty parties and their fitting punishment pun-Ishment I wish to announce that I have withdrawn the offer of 5000 reward made by the state for tho punishment punish-ment of the guilty parties and havo advised that tho parties who had of fered rewards to do likewise They have agreed to and today there is not a single dollar of reward offered for the conviction of the murderers of Bteunenberg A reward of 51000 Is now offered by us for Information leading to the arrest of J L Simp kins and this is the only reward now offered In connection with the Steun enberg assassination My reason for withdrawing the reward re-ward and advising others who had offered rewards to withdraw them is that I felt that no detective assocla tlon or anyone else Is entitled to tho reward offered by the state Harry Orchard was arrested before any detectives de-tectives were on the ground on information Infor-mation secured by a committee of citizens of Caldwell assisted by a few of us who loft Boise on tho special train a few minutes after the assassination assassi-nation of exGovernor Steunenberg We were all tho friends and neighbors neigh-bors of tho governor and I am sure their services will always be remom bored with gratitude |
