Show western demands the balters are demanding special duties on western or they declare that the Dingley bill shall not pass the senate they want 7 or 7 cants a pound on wool of the third class 1 cents per pound on hides and 1 cents on lead ores acid is also raised from 3 to scents per pound and borax at the same rate these are the main demands of the western senators and they will have to bo complied with as it is openly asserted that the tariff bill cannot pass in fact it is tied up in the committee pending the adoption of the western schedule by senator jones of nevada when alie committee comes to his term he says ho wil vote for protection there has been a tendency in the past protective measures to disregard western interests because the majorities were in the east now it seems to us that the west should profit by its position but there should be no holdup hold up policy pursued any thing gained in that way is not secured with good feeling and the first opportunity that presents itself will result in a remodeling of the tariff to the detriment of the west what ia most needed in this section of the country and in fact all sections for that matter is a tariff that will stand and become a basis for future business operations any measure that is intensely partisan or sectional will not be allowed to stand and more injury than good is done by a tariff of that we would therefore favor a moderate tariff that would likely stand even though immediate political reverses come rather than one so high and so sectional that it would be changed at the first opportunity port unity we think the balters are pressing their claims just now with too much vigor and rather unjustly in some cases while they may succeed in their efforts for to get the measure passed all they ask for will be granted in a year or two from now however the west may not hold the balance of power and then look out for retribution vve are not strong enough yet to fight the east and that is just the kind of a fight the bolt ers have precipitated |
