Show I I SOLDIER HIS SHIRT GOT II I L battle 1 I T was just after tho battle of Shiloh that William C Phlpps met the man who J ll was to live and has lived over since In his memory 1 as his silent partner says tho Indianapolis Star Hero Is the story as Mr Phlpps tolls It Somewhere that man Is probably i living today ho was hale and hearty appearing I dont know him and never did know his name but Ill bet ho Is the big man of tho community where ho lives Ill bet every per Bon that knows him L L fs his friend You see It happened like this After the fight at Shiloh most of the boys or a good many of them at least had lost all they had In tho way of equipment extra clothes and such things A good many were wounded I was wearing a bloody torn shirt and I wanted another wanted It bad too I went out to forage for It I hadnt left camp very far behind when 1 saw a fellow chop ping on a log getting firewood evi dently I started toward him and ho kept chopping on I got closer and 7t < > < flnall stopped near him and watched him Chopchop he kept right on didnt seem to see me Then 1 said to him Partner look here see my shirt Im lookln for another one You dont know where I could get one do you Ho had stopped as I started to speak and when I finished he raised icfa 14 r I w his ax way up and flank It Into the log Ho let It stick there ripped off his coat threw It down and peeled off his shirt He tossed It to mo and put his coat back on grabbed his ax and went on chopping Ho never opened his mouth uovor so much as grunted J Yr L2 < t > i + Did 1 take that shirt Well I guess I did That fellow was my si lent partner and he Is yet No I never met him again I looked back as I started for camp and he didnt seem to hear me when I thanked him Just kept chopping on that logchop chop Mr Phlpps has a peculiar distinc tion He has n grave on the Shiloh battle field which for a time was marked with a rough slab bearing his name and the number of his regi ment Comrades picked up tho mu tllated form of a man they believed to be him and burled It after the bat tie to the surprise of the soldier who passed and saw the slab thrust Into the mound It wai near the spot where he had been wounded and too weak to correct the mistake Mr Phipps says ho looked at It silently a few moments and passed on I |
