Many men think that the newspaper men are persistent dunners. says the Tellurhle Journal. By way of comparison let us suppose that a farmer raises one thousand bushels of wheat a year and sells this to one thousand persons of the country, saying, "1 will hand you a dollar in short time." The fanner does not want to be small and says all right. Soon the one thousand bushels are gone and he has nothing to show for it, and then he realizes that he has fooled away his whole crop and Its value to him is due in a thousand little driblets, consequently he Is seriously embarrassed In his business because his debtors, each owing him a dollar, treat It as a small matter and think It would not help much. Continue this kind of business year In and year out as the publisher does, how long would he stand it? A moment's thought will convince anyone that the publisher has cause for persistent dunning. PAY UP. o India Is Progressing. Within a few weeks a son of Keshub Chunder Sen, the famous organizer of the Brahmo SomaJ of India, has married the widowed daughter of a rajah. That is an extraordinary rebellion against an ancient rule In India, and the beginning of a domestic revolution which has the support of many advanced Hindoos who do not themselves dare to more than speak In Its favor. The stores of Spanish Fork are all very artistically decorated for the holidays; people from the surrounding country will find It to their advantage to do all their trading with our merchants. An English motorist has been fined so often and so heavily that he has Issued an advertisement stating that In consequence of this "persecution he Is compelled to withdraw his support from all charities. Considerable work is being done at the Utah experiment station along the lines of arid farming. The station has under its control six dry farms located In the following counties over the state of Utah: Juab, Iron, San Juan, Tooele, Sevier and Washington. These farms being thus distributed over the state makes it possible to test this comparatively new system of farming under varying conditions of climate and soil. The data. In possession of the station,' thus collected is of unlimited value to the nu n interested in dry land farming. We have already harvested two crops from these farms, either of which would pay for the land, fence and clear off the sage, plow, seed and harvest the crop; all In eighteen months or less. This Is what has been, done on the dry desert lands of Utah by the men In charge at the Utah experiment station. The same can he done by oth-er- s and Is being done by the progressive farmers. When this Is true, why Is It that so many farmers are making complete failures, or at best, only n mere existence on their dry farms? The answer Is easy. The average farmer does not take advantage of his He never reads what opportunities. is being done by competent men, men who are spending their time In studying along the very lines he Is Interested In. And yet, much of that which Is published, really worth while, Is Ignored by those It Is meant to help. The Agricultural college and experiment station are government Institutions which we all help to maintain. The farmers of the state should Investigate nnd keep In touch with these institutions, and, whenever possible, spend a month or six weeks at the college studying any of the lines of farming or animal industry In which they are most Interested. Special courses have been arranged along these lines for farmers and their sons who are unable to take advantage of the regular training given at the Institution. The winter course opens January 3 aud will continue for six weeks. The entomological department has just closed a very successful seasons work in spraying against the codling moth. One orchard had only I per cent of wormy fruit and the other, closer to town, a little over 2 per cent with two early sprayings. This Is the second season's work on the same orchards and along the same lines. The results not only show the value of spraying, but emphasize the fact that from the same treatment better and better returns may be expected each succeeding year. The new mechanic arts building Is approaching completion. By Christmas the only indication of having had a fire will be such changes in building and apparatus as eight or ten years of experience has proved to be advantageous. The Instructors In forging, with the assistance of a few advanced students, have made all hangers, truss rods, anchor bolts, etc., for the new building. An improvised shop for this purpose was set up soon after the fire, and approximately four tons of Iron have been worked up. The carpentry department has been busy building new benches, tool cabinets, and stock racks for the various , shops. It should be of Interest to taxpayers to note the efficiency, ns practical workers, of students who have had from one to three years' training In blaeksuilthlng and carpentry here: A.
