Show r t PUBLICITY WORK OF THE HARRIMAN LINES Great Efforts Put Forth In Advertising the West Salt Lake CltyIn reviewing the record for 1909 the passenger department depart-ment of the Oregon Short Line Railroad Rail-road company under tho directions of Mr D 13 burley general passenger passen-ger agent has good reason for feel ling elation It has seen general ravel Increase more than 50 per cent over past years This Includes ravel to Yellowstone Park to the llaska Yukon Pacifc exposition spring and fall colonist business from the east and local traffic all or Which clearly demonstrates tho awak ned and growing Interest In this In ijbrmountaln country and tho Pacific Northwest This travel has not all been Iran lent or tourist travel much of It llTas remained with us which tho Miraculous growth of Utah Idaho and the whole west clearly attests These great increases must not bo charged to chance nor to the labors L a recent day alone for back of hem lie many years of ceaseless and untiring effort along publicity lines file cry having ever been Come west come west come west Tho call l of tho west has been heard after these many years and those who have heeded the call and have come west 1nave seen and have conquered and an Immeasurably rich territory In a oncedesert country Is the answer to that call to conquest as exampled Into In-to vast agricultural sections of Idaho fend Utah that have been opened to Settlement The passenger department of tho Oregon Short Line company has spent largo sums of money In directing at Button to the scenic wonders and e agricultural and commercial resources re-sources of the territory it serves Turing the year just past efforts long these lines have been redoubled tnong new publicity features adopted rb icing the Community Plan a cooperative co-operative arrangement between the railroad and various communities un Kler which individual booklets of avery a-very high order of merit both from sartlstlc and argumentivo standpoint fare Issued Up to the present time some fifteen communities have enlisted enlist-ed this service among which may be aontlonod such prosperous communities communi-ties as Boise Twin Falls Idaho Falls American Falls Halley Blackfoot ocatello Buhl Burley Rupert Rich Held Gooding St Anthony and others oth-ers Outside of this the Oregon Short Line company at its own ex Dense has recently published a very high class booklet entitled Scenic Idaho which bodies forthln artistic stylo tho scenic beauties of Idaho written description being almost entirely en-tirely avoided In addition to Community publications publica-tions various other pamphlets and folders are published from time to tlmo on a variety of subjects as an I example of which may be mentioned a pamphlet on the subject of Orchard Heating treating of tho methods of smudging for the saving of fruit crops from early spring frost which will appear from the press at an early date For Yellowstone Park a handsome publication printed in tour colors containing con-taining an entertaining description of this wonderland has been published I each year for the last twelve years under the title of Where uusii tho Geysers and this publication has probably been as effective as any other one feature in creating an interest in-terest in the park and In demonstratIng demonstrat-ing the advantages of entering via the Oregon Short Lino and the western west-ern entrance For the coming season Mr Burley has something under consideration in the way of a now publication for Yellowstone Yel-lowstone Park which if It materializes material-izes as hoped and Is equal to expectations expecta-tions will be a good step in advance of anything that has yet been produced pro-duced by any railroad in the form of a descriptive booklet wane the Oregon Short Line has been rendering publicity service here and outside the Union Pacific Southern South-ern Pacific and Oregon Railroad and Navigation company and others of the related lines have been rendering support throughout tho United States and tho vast returns incident to these efforts Is undeniable proof that the west Is worthy of being advertised ad-vertised These interests will spend during the year 1910 approximately one million dollars strictly along advertising ad-vertising lines Whether publicity alone has wrought tho miracle of the west during the last ten years Is questionable ques-tionable Rates have been materially reduced great Irrigation enterprises and commercial industries have been developed railroad service has been Impoved the most modern methods of transporting and protecting the Public having been Incorporated such as the electric block signal system 1 and these varied efforts backed by merit of country and the faith in its future have no doubt combined to work tho wonder |
