The giant, liner Leviathan, fringing General Jolin J. Pershing home from the war, was 135 miles off Sandy Hook at midnight tonight, plowing her way through the sea at a speed i of 22 miles an hour in the face of j a veritable "barrage" of radio j welcomes. At midnight the naval radio service had sent 110 messages to the general from the Hoboken ter-I ter-I minal. By Universal Service. N EW YORK, Sept. 7. There have been completed preparations today for a three days' celebration, beginning early tomorrow morning, which will be the greatest celebration In the city's history. And a plain, "modest man, an old Indian fighter, by the name of John J. Tershtng will be the center of the whole affair, which will include receptions and banquets and a mammoth parade down Fifth avenue, Wednesday morning, ; led by General Pershing. Speeding here from Washington tonight are Secretary of War Baker and many other officials, who will join the official welcoming party which early tomorrow morning will go down the bay to meet the giant transport Leviathan and extend to the returning commander of the A. E. F. the ffrst "welcome home" greetings as he approaches ap-proaches his native land. Noisy Welcome Awaits. The official welcoming committee, which will include Mayor Hylan and the mayor's committee, proceeds down the bay. while thousands of other persons In no way connected with officialdom, but nevertheless neverthe-less anxious to get an early sight of America's great general, and to bellow messages of welcome through megaphones, also will go to meet the Leviathan. After landing at Hoboken pier, General Pershing will be hurried across the Intervening Inter-vening water to the battery and thence , by automobile to the New York City hall, where the first format reception wiil be held. The entire city will be gay with flags on Wednesday, for there is no doubt that the people will respond to Mayor Hylan's request that every possible flag be brought for parade day, and Fifth .avpnue is already a sight worth seeing, with thousands of flags, large and smai', and bunting everywhere billowing to the breeze. Great Parade Planned. The parade will be the most comprehensive compre-hensive affair of the kind ever known hero. Indeed, it will he a military spectacle spec-tacle of the highest order. Mounted on a charger. General Pershing will lead j the procession. H's guard of honor will consist of the gallant first division, its depleted ranks fi'Jed by replacement ' troops.
