Show DATES SET FOB SAFETY DRIVE Proclamation Names Accident Acci-dent Prevention Cam-j Cam-j paign Period. I Proclamation was yesterday issued by Secretary of State Harden Bennion, as acting governor, designating the period between October 18 and 31, Inclusive, for the observance of accident prevention campaign. The proclamation reads: "Of the many complex problems looking to improvement of the material and physical welfare of the people, none is more important than accident prevention. preven-tion. To evolve a solution of this problem prob-lem the United States railroad administration adminis-tration has taken the lead and has in- ' stltuted a campaign culminating in the national railroad accident prevention '. drive, embracing the period October IS i to 31, inclusive. 1 "It generally is recognized that self-preservation self-preservation is-the first law of nature, but such an assumption appears open to i question in view of the appallingly large number of casualties annually resulting i from carelessness. Statistics show that i on railroads alone there are approximately ! 5000 trespassers kilied and 5000 injured annually, while accidents at grade crossings cross-ings aggregate approximately 2000 killed and 4600 Injured each year. The number of casualties from this source shows an alarming increase each year, with no remedy in sight except through stringent legislation and a vigorous campaign of education. "While the railroads have assumed the leadership in the accident prevention campaign, the subject is equally important impor-tant in other phases of the industrial life of our country and should receive the ardent support, not only of -our industrial Institutions, but of all our public institutions, insti-tutions, the public in general and the individual. "Nov, therefore, T, Harden Bennion, acting governor of the state of Utah, do hereby designate :he period October IS to 31, inclusive, as accident prevention period in Utah, and urge observance of the principle involved by our citizens, our public and commercial institutions, and suggest appropriate educational discussion dis-cussion of the subject in our schools, churches and homes." |
