| Show made by mr powers on our leaders THE CHARGE IS REFUTED president cainnon and apostle smi it statements S 15 charges judge powers has made another false attack on prominent leaders of the latter day saints last evening in salt lake ho read n carefully prepared at one of the funeral agn brings ol 01 democracy wherein he said acly last monday in the conference in box elder county george Q candon made a personal attack apon myself referring to the historical hiat orical campaign of 1889 nud 1890 he said that a certain man was paid to steal salt lake city and now he is at the head of a great political party monday evening at a republican meeting in willard city john henry smith said powers got for stealing salt lake city and I 1 do not know what the democrats are paying him to steal the territory powers thought that he could control everything and tried to net the dominant church to whisper in hia behalf and in behalf of his party and because he could not accomplish it sent out to the world that the church could not be tru eted the salt lake tribune sent out a reporter after tho charges were made and asked for a statement from president cannon he isaid I 1 deny in the most unequivocal manner every statement which is made to the effect that I 1 attacked judge powers at brigham city or at any other place I 1 did not mention his name neither did I 1 have him in my thoughts in any remarks that I 1 made at brigham city in proof of what I 1 ay I 1 have no doubt the testimony of any number of reputable men can be obtained are president lorenzo snow elders brigham young rulon wella and seymour B young adolph reporters who oh sunday took my remarks in shorthand and made a full synopsis on monday my remarks cau dioning the people against being misled by the falsehoods which were being BO frealy circulated were general in their character and no party or individual was mentioned it being my intention to have them apply to the whole situation and to all cases apostle john henry smith who is in the northern part of the territory was telegraphed to and answered as follows I 1 did make reference to judge powers and said it had been said he had received for the city campaign and that more than likely he would get his reward for his work from the democratic party I 1 did not say he stole the city thu another vicious assault has been made and successfully parried next |
