S. marine corps, who was a captain In the Guardia NacionaJ Dominieana, Dominican republic, repub-lic, was ambushed by outlaws and murdered mur-dered while returning from a town where he- had delivered a prisoner for trial. He was accompanied by a Porto Riean, who escaped and gave the alarm. A detachment detach-ment of fifteen marines went in pursuit of the outlaws, made contact with a band of twenty-five of them the next day, killed five, and the others, many of them wounded, escaped in the dense underbrush. under-brush. There were no marine casualties. Articles belonging to Knox were found on the dead and wounded bandits, giving good reason to believe that at least some of the murderers had paid the penally. The body of Sergeant Knox was buried with full military honors in the National cemetery at Brooklyn, X. Y. Sergeant Knox was esteemed highly by the citizens citi-zens where he served, and no animosity toward him existed except among the evil doers, against whom he was active in his police capacity. He first enlisted in the marine corps on April 24, ISuS, at New York City, and was on his third cruise when killed on duty. His sister, Mrs. E. S.
