Another Satt Lake youth, member of the ; United States marine corps, lias given up j his life battling on the western front in ! France. Joseph S. Wilkes, 19 years of age, son of Albert Wilkes, manager of Hie Utah Photo Materials company, residing at 403 Seventh avenue, is reported as having been .killed in action in France in the marine corps casualty fist published this morning. The youth was a member of the Sixth regiment, 79th company. He was in the fighting when Raymond Crow, the first Utah boy to be killed in action, met his death in battle. The Fifth and Sixth marine regiments were the crack organizations organi-zations which recently, made the successful success-ful American advance. Wilkes was 19 years of age January 11, and he left on a transport for Europe January 15. In a letter to his folks he humorously said he thought the war might have "been called off for one day to permit him to observe his birthday before sailing. On Friday last his mother received a big, cheery letter from the boy. In which i he apologized for not having written on Mothers' day. He explained that on that day be was packed like a sardine in a box car going up to the firing lines and had no elbow room whatever. He also wrote that If he were in civilian life again that he would make the same choice of the marines as the branch of service where he could best serve his country. |
