Canfield of Local Office Earns Promotion; Started as Private. Sergeant Harry A. Canfield, formerly a member of the local army recruiting station, has finally realized his ambition to become a commissioned orncer m Vncle Sam's army. He has been commissioned com-missioned a second lieutenant. Lieutenant Canfield was sergeant-in-charge of the army recruiting station for a year, during which time he supervised the acceptance of over 5900 for the army. These men were all volunteers, about 3400 being Utah residents and L'300 from the state of Idaho. There were also about 2000 accepted who gave their residences other than- Utah or Idaho. Lieutenant Canfield commenced his third term in the army when he applied for enlistment at Pocatello. Idaho, April li, 1917, and was forwarded to the main station here and thence to Fort Douglas. As do all men entering the service, he started in the grade of private, was assigned as-signed to Pocatello station for duty, and later was transferred to Salt Lake. His organization, the 320th Labor battalion, bat-talion, will shortly leave for overseas duty from its present location. Camp Funston, Kansas. Lieutenant Canfield is the third enlisted man from the Salt Lake recruiting district to receive a commission commis-sion this year. |
