Show FOOD SAVINGS RULES I ARE POSTED AT FORT Order Issued to 2000 Men by Colonel Alfred Hasbrouck; Part of Conservation Con-servation Campaign. Suggestions for the conservation of food used by the 2000 men in the Twentieth regiment at Fort Douglas have been ordered posted in all company com-pany quarters by Colonel Alfred Hasbrouck, Has-brouck, post commandant. Following are the provisions of the order: "Wheat bread will not be served at five meals during the week. "Desserts will not be served oftener than once daily. "The organization will be confined, as tar as possible, to the ration allowance allow-ance for sugar. "Breakfast foods will be limited, as far as practicable, to -those of corni rice or oat products. Sugar will be used sparingly with breakfast foods. "Beans, peas, rice, turnips, carrots and fresh vegetables are abundant and should be used freely. "There is an abuu'danee of sweet and Irish potatoes. They should' be used freely, the latter as a supplement to the bread component and the former furnishing a certaiD amount of sugar. "Frying to be discontinued as far as possible, boiling, broiling, roasting and baking being substituted. "Soup stocks to be kept iu all kitchens. "The utilization of beef tallows and fats. " Xo bread should be thrown away. There are many ways in which stale bread can be utilized. "Syrups and raisins may be used freely to augment the decreased sugar supplies. "Use poultry, rabbits and fish wbere-ever wbere-ever possible m lieu of beef and pork. Veal should be prohibited in ail messes. "Cooks and mess sergeants should see that plates are not overfilled. More should not be taken on the plate than can be consumed. "Have hot cakes on Sunday morning and corn bread on bean days. ' ' Company commanders will by frequent fre-quent inspection see how these suggestions sugges-tions are carried out." |
