By STAFF CORRESPONDENT- i.'AMr KEARNY, Ca.1., Jan. 1. The first Now Year's pent in the service of Uncle S.im was one that will be long remembered by the an illcrymcn from Utah. While, it was a day of extreme quietness at Uie great cantonment, the eTiie at San Die3'o contrasted greatly with it, for there everything was bustle and excitement, with the championship football game between Utah and the navy for the southern championship the one Mihiect of debate and conversation. So bugle blasta broke the stillness of the cantonment this morning and the Pnlar schedule was eliminated. The happy hi LilU rvmen were allowed to remain re-main in their hunka until they felt like arousing themselves, and it was nearly 10 o'clock before the last ones, emerged from them tents and made haste towards the mess halls and breakfast. The majority ol the men, however, were astir before 7 o'clock and a half hour later there were some spirited baseball games being fought out on the large pa-rade pa-rade grounds. Breakfast was almost forgotten, for-gotten, the men preferring tu pile up an appetite for the bounteous New Year's dinner. Coffee and toast composed the first meat menu. Those who preferred tneir bunks to exercise were not so fortunate, fortu-nate, for their mrvtl consisted of a glassy look from the cook and a whiff of sizzling turkey which escaped from the ovens of the hue gaa stoves. Y. M. C. A. Meetings. The Young Men's 'Christian association buildings contained many joys for the ainlieijmen last night. Programmes which contained the best talent in the c.j n I on men t were held, and, as the men enjoyed the amusement, their t!n cups were filled with steaming coffee and chocolate and tiieir laps were filled with fruit, nuts and cakes. Moving pictures were sandwiched In between the many acts which comprised the programme. The pleasures continued until five min-u!js min-u!js before midnight, when a. "Y" secretary sec-retary took the slase and requested quiet-Tic-s. The talk and laughter hushed and within a few moments supreme quietness renrncd throughout lite entire cantonment. canton-ment. At the Sun Diego depot an auto stage met the gridiron men and they proceeded graded by the three military bands of t!v Sixty-f if t li brigade, with the soldiers following and cheering. Uvery train which pulled into Han Pie so yesterday and this morning contained t'tah people anxious to see their friends and relatives ami also anxious to witness the big football struggle.
