Show WAR GARDENS CROP VALUED AT $323,818 Salt Lake Residents Add Much to Food Store of .Nation, Defense Council- Is Told. It was shown in the report of Dr. John A. Widtaoe of the' agricultural committee and chairman of the coiv servation and emergency committee of the state conncil or defense, which was submitted at a meeting of the committee commit-tee at the Commercial club yesterday, that- the people of Salt Lake, in war gardens within the limits of the city, produced foodstuffs to the value of ! $323,818. Of this produce, $204. oStS ! worth was grTvri on vacant city lots land $119,232 in back yard pardens. ; Au aggregate of more than 100U acres j of ground, the greater part of which I during previous years had been unproductive, unpro-ductive, were utilized in the work, j According to Dr. Widtsoe's report, j about 64 per cent of tho work done by i adults was successful. Dr. Widtsoe reported also that a survey sur-vey of .the possibilities of next year for raising garden produce is now being made, with the anticipation that a greater acreage may be utilized under un-der more systematic gardening. It was reported that the great majority ma-jority of the persons to whom the com- mittee had extended credit fnr seed at : the time of planting last spring had paid for the seeds provided for their gardens. The loss will be minimum. L. 11. Farnsworth, executive chairman chair-man of the conservation and emergency committee of the state council of defense, de-fense, has tendered his resignation, due to the pressure of other duties, as chairman chair-man of the state, couuril of defence, and Herbert .S. Auerbach has been appointed ap-pointed to succeed him. |
