Show WESLEY KING BACK" FRDMTHE BORDER Testifies Before Federal Grand Jury; Praises Utah Boys. Major and Mrs. Wesfey King returned re-turned yesterday from a two weeks' trip to Arizona and California, coming hack by way of San Francisco. Major King went down on a subpoena to appear ap-pear before tho federal grand jury at Tucson, Ariz., where an investigation has been in progress, relativo to the alleged movement of war munitions toward to-ward the Mexican border last summer and fall. Major King made a speech, before the Rotary club of Salt Lake after being mustered out of the federal service last November in which he indicated some knowledge of these matterst and his evidence was taken along with others who were acquainted with the facts. "Utah should be particularly proud of tho part which the second squadron of cavalry was given an opportunity to play in the brush with the Mexicans on the border, February 26 and 27," said Major King. "Lieutenant W. C. Stark and Lieutenant C. H. Arns distinguished themselves in particular. "To prevent his own men from firing fir-ing upon Lieutenant Arns and his detachment, de-tachment, as they came up on tho flank of the Mexicans, Lieutenant Stark risked his own life by crossing an open piece of country in full view of Mexicans Mexi-cans and under constant lire. "Bullets splintered the rocks at his feet, some of the splinters cutting his clothing. He was just able to reach his outlying patrols in time to prevent their firing upon their own comrades. Then he went back across the same open field under fire again. An eye-witness told me that he was at a complete loss to understand how Stark got back alive. "Several of Stark's men had faces and hands splintered by rocks hit by the Mexican bullets. The marvel is that none of them was killed. It is believed that the Mexicans did not fare nearly so well. "American history contains no record of acta any braver than those of Arns and Stark and their men in holding back and flauking out an enemy whose force was unknown, thoroughly barricaded barri-caded and shooting from perfect cover." |
