Show BORAH GOES AFTER THE IIBSI Idaho Senator Is Interrupted Inter-rupted During Speech at Ogden Meeting. Special to The Tribune. OGDEN", Oct. 24. Criticism of the Democratic administration for the Adam-son Adam-son eight-hour law and denunciation of I President Wilson for his Mexican policy predominated a speech delivered here tonight to-night by Senator William E. Borah of I Idaho. He al.-o attacked the Democrats for extravagance, citing several appropriation appropri-ation bills, and outlined what he said would have been the policy of a Republican Repub-lican president with regard to American lives and property in foreign countries. For the first time in the present campaign cam-paign in this city the speech of Sena or Borah was marked by an attempt at heckling. There were also several outbursts out-bursts of applause for President Wilson and a faint hissing from the balcony o the theater while- the speaker was discussing dis-cussing the eight-hour law. In the early stages of his speech Senator Sen-ator Borah read an extract j'rom t lie speech of acceptance delivered by President Presi-dent Wilson. He had just concluded the j quotation, "and we are asking tor sup- ! port because the Democratic party has ! done its duty by the American people," , when a woman applauded. She con- : tinued to applaud even as the Idalio sen- a tor removed his eyeglasses and peered in her direction. By this time a score of ; others joined in tho hand -clapping, : drowning Senator Borah's attempts to resume re-sume Ids speech.. When be resumed he said: "You perhaps have been misled by the president's statement and your own enth ustasm." A few minutes later, while the speaker was talking of the caucus system of the the Democrats, he referred to "this sys- i tern of government." "Whose system?" asked somebody from the body of the J house, and the question was repeated i when Senator Borah hesitated. As the j heckler put his request the third time, Senator Borah answered. "The Lord only ! knows," and resumed his talk. The an- j swer was applauded. Additional references refer-ences to President Wilson during the ad- I dress brought scattered applause from j the audience. In his Introductory remarks Senator I Borah declared that, due to the European j war. the American people have given less ' thought to so-called domestic questions 1 than for any other period in the nation's ! history. He added that no vote Ameri- i cans might cast next month would affect in- the least the conflict now going, on in . Europe. Referring to the one-term plank i in the Democratic national platform, the Idaho senator said the Republicans would see to it that this platform pledge was lived up to by the party. Senator Borah denounced the Democrats Demo-crats for their caucus system, which, he asserted, had taken every important measure from free discussion and consideration consid-eration in congress since March 4, 913. He charged that twenty-nine Democratic senators in caucus could force a measure upon the majority and finally force it through the senate and house. "It is not merely a violation of a plank in the Democratic platform." said the speaker, "but a distinct form of corruption that will rot the very pillars of government.'" |
