Show SIASCONSET RADIO i STATIDNJS CLOSED Marconi Company Withdraws With-draws Defi; Naval Officers Offi-cers in Charge. WASHINGTON, Sept. 25. By order of President Wilson as commander in chief of the army and navy, the wireless station sta-tion of the 'Marconi company at Siascon-set. Siascon-set. Mass., was closed today because it declined to recognize the riht of the federal government to exercise a censorship censor-ship over the plant. The navy depart ment took no cognizance cogniz-ance of the tact that the Marconi company com-pany had filed in a federal court an application ap-plication for an injunction to restrain the naval officers from closing1 or censoring cen-soring the station. The wireless company finally decided to offer no resistance and the station was closed at 1 p. in. The navv department made public tonight to-night the telegrams that had passed between be-tween the department and Ensign V.. B-Nixon, B-Nixon, U. S. N., in charge at the Sias-conset Sias-conset station. The statement follows: At 1:23 p. m.. the navy department received the following message from Ensign N'ix6n. the government censor cen-sor at Siasconset station: "Siasconset, Mass.. Sept. 26, 1914. "The following letter was received when vour Instructions were delivered deliv-ered to the Marconi man in charge of this station: " T acknowledge receipt of your letter of instructions relative to the cessation of all radio communications at Siasconset. Mass.. and would ask if you are prepared to carry out your orders bv force? 'Marconi Wireless Telegraph com-panv com-panv of America.' "I request instructions. "(Signed) E. B. NIXON." At 2:17 p. m.. the department received re-ceived the following: 'Siasconset, Mass., Sept. 25, 1914. "'Secretary of the Navy. Washington, Washing-ton, D. C. "The Marconi company withdraws letter previously sent and the station was closed at 1 p. m. "(Signed E. B. NTXONV No instructions from the department had been sent to Ensign Nixon between be-tween the receipt of these two messages. |
