reported aa followay fol lowa to the city council of provo city GENTLEMEN your committee on fire department to whom was referred the petition of knight brothers et al asking for the of appointment of the chief and assistant chief of the provo firo department respectfully fully report that we havo had the matter under can and in our opinion there id some force in the argument presented in relation 10 the of marshal and chief ot fire department part ment and of a policeman and as distant chief of firo department bein occupied by the same men the officers themselves regard the situation in tte same light as they have both placed theia resignations at our disposal the finances ot the city do not warrant a paid chief for that office exclusively the city ia already paying two men lor the fire department the present cost of maintaining the fire department is about per mouzli and IB naf part of the marshals salary ia charged to the fire department you will rowdily see chat the hobt economical plan has been adopted but to facilitate matters we respectfully recommend for the reason forth and that only that the resignation ot william hill as assistant chief be accepted but that the resignation ot john A brown be not accepted on the grounds stated viz an insufficiency of city revenue and moreover your committee have been approached by many of the active fireman and good citizens and your peti tio ners expressing a friendly feeling and confidence in marshal brown as chief of the fire department V e therefore recommend that the chief and those of the old members who will iu the future aa they have dona in the past give him their undivided support with such new members as the chief may enlist to fill up the company cub mit for the approval of the council the name of any
