Show IT WAS A WONDER. It was a wonder to bco tho immense crowds that attended the benefit sale by Sarah Bernhardt of newspapers at noon yesterday in this city on tho corner cor-ner of Main and Second South streets, and never did tho illustrious lady appear ap-pear to better advantage. Tho street corner was packed by ft great throng comprisinc thousands filling the four corners to a considerable distance along each. It was a gay. well-dressed throng, rich in brilliant colore, in fullness of life, and hearty in enthusiasm for the salo. Every one wanted to see Sarah Bernhardt, and there was keen competition compe-tition to buv tho newspapers that she offered for. sale. The first prices paid were extraordinary, and all in all it was a most creditable event in every respect. re-spect. Officialdom lent its prestige to the scone, tho high-school cadets were there with their band, all in oxccllont trim, and tho crowd was in happy accord with the purpose and method of the benefit and determined to make it a distinguished dis-tinguished success. It was a scene long to be remembered by those who viewed it, and one that will go into tho history of Salt Lake as at' once unique and an extraordinary success. |
