baden and other cities of germany and are restored to health and the various mineral and medicinal springs and health resorts of the united states are crowded from year to year with persons in search of health and pleasure castilla springs located on the eio grande western railway about fifteen miles southeast of and about three miles from the mouth of provo canyon bids fair to rival even the famous springs of germany as a health resort southworth brothers the proprietors prie tors 0 the springs realize that they are possessed of a bonanza and are sparing neither pains nor expense to make bastilla Ua stilla the leading health resort of the west nature has already done much toward a the accomplishment of this object the medicinal properties of these waters cannot be excelled the atmosphere is clear and bracing the scenery is grand and sublime and the place is easy of access either by rail or vehicle ye hicle the R G W company will in the near future build a handsome depot at I 1 ahe the firm of R kletting architect of j salt lake has prepared plans and spec for a grand dancing pavilion i two large hotels and numerous cottages and bath houses which the brothers expect to build during the coming summer mr wat ting of provo representing mr kletting will act as superintendent of construction of tho buildings A number of neat frame structures before noticed in the comprising a store bath bouse and cottages have already been erected and excavations for the foundation for the large invalid hotel has been made let ua board the rio grande western and proceed to future health resort and glance at it as it will appear when the contemplated improvements abail have been made after a pleasant ride of half an hour on the cars we alight at the magnificent new depo tand looking around we behold that wo are indeed in a typical mountain home Maes sive clina and towering peaks are to oe seen on every side north of the track and almost at the very foot of the mountains is the new dancing pa with the invalids hotel on the east and the general hotel on the west beyond the general hotel is the public bath house and the pool on the side of the mountain here and there are neat little sum aier houses on the south side of the track and on the banks of tha spanish fork river is a half mile race course the river is spanned by a suspension bridge which leads to the judges arand stand on the opposite side of the river and to a number of additional octagon summer cottages on the south side of the canyon haying taken a birds eye new of th situation we will examine more minutely first THE INVALIDS HOTEL the dimensions of the main portion of the invalids hotel are 53 by ofelt and of the wing 55 by 40 feet the building is three stories hi gh the first and second stories are built of brown stone quarried on the premises and the third ia of frame with a painted shingle exterior in the third story are ornamental dormer windows and in one corner of the building is a tower extending one story higher than the main building the beights of this tower not including the flag staff ia 72 feet around the tower 19 a promenade balcony supported by ornamental doodan brackets A croup of hiah stone chimneys with iron braces appear on the roof of the build inn surrounding the structure is a porch sixteen feet wide obyr the main entrance to the porch aid at the southeast corner are large gables fillad with beautiful tul wood carvings bursting forth from the midst of the carving is the sign hotel passing under this sign and into the building through the front door we find ourselves in the main hillway hill way to our right is lh dining room 36 feet 6 inches by 53 feet G inches on the left is a rotunda 21 by 18 occupying lie tower and a portion of the main building and comprising the office a public writing room and a baggage room next on the left is a saloon 18 feet square at the end of the hal is a wash room containing fine marble basins leading from the dining room on the right ia a email passage through which we enter the kitchen 21 by lo 10 feet in size at the left of the passage is a second large hallway adjoining which on alie let am two parlors each 16 by 18 feet in size doors allow abo awu parlors to be thrown into one when occasion requires at alie end of thia hallway on the the light is a plunge bath room 12 feet square adjoining this bath room and alfao on alie left ot he hallway are bed chambers for the convenience of invalids who may desire to retire as soon as they have taken their bath Jle to the main hall we find leaning to llie second floor a fine antique oak staircase on ascending the staircase we enter an elaborate parlor in the second story of tha tower there are forty two bed acoma on this floor with ada limni alcoves and clos ets on the third floor we find 32 bed rooms and in alie tower is another parlor the fourth story of the tower ie reached uy a flight of stairs from the barlor around the tower on this story is a balcony from which a fine view of the surrounding bills is obtained tife DANCING PAVILION A short distance west of the invalids hotel we find the octagon shaped dancing pavilion it stands on eight large piers and between these piers are blaay panels around the building is an eight foot promenade uro which is provided with rustic seats for the convenience of those who have become heated or tired of dancing or may desire a pleasant little tete a lete between waltzes there are eight eye winks in the roof and in tb center of the roof is a large boer surmounted by a galvanized iron musical lyre which the purpose of a weather vane at the left ol 01 the building is a smaller tower which is connected with the large tower by steps over the roof wo enter the ball room which measures 56 feet by 56 and find the floor filled with ft merry crowd gliding the airy fanciful fanci tul to the strains ot sweeta muaia the flooring is of deorsia pine entering a corridor at the left we ascend to the gallery 10 feet wide which encircles the room and for a momen take our seats among the sedate spectators the roof oyer our heads is s massive piece of irame work and is handsomely decorated the only sap port it receives is from the walls not a single pillar appearing the gallery is supported by means of iron rods from the roof from the gallery we ascend to the small tower of aba building and thence large one and find it amply large enough to accommodate any band it is 18 feet in diameter THE HOTEL the hotel for tle accommodation f the general traveling public is connected with iho pa vallion by a passage wy ic is a frame building 48 feet square and twos fories high it contains quite a jiember of porches balconies loggia gables a deck and dommers dormers which give it quite a neat and finished appearance the first story is constructed of clap boards and then cornea a neat cornice the second story is of dimension shingles A cornice with brackets encircles the building the deck on top of the building which is surrounded by a ballu strade is 20 feet aguare there is a flag staff frum the front gable from which the stars and strips wave majestically ti wenter irom the into the parlor 26 by 23 feet in size to the right is the ladies parlor 14 by 15 feet in size and to tho left ia the office and baggage room immediately in the rear of ahe parlor is the dining room the two rooms are connected by meana of sliding doors bose are thrown back an opening of 16 by 10 8 na nadeane practically the two rooms are one at the right of the parlor is the corridor leading to the ballroom ball room in the pavilion at the side of the corridor ia a door opening into ft barroom bar room A door from the barroom bar room leads to the ade that encircles ahe building in the rear of the main building and connected with the dining room is an addition in which are dining room kitchen and pantry at the left of the parlor i a hallway from which is a flight f stairs to the second floor on the second floor are nine bed rooms and a sitting room from the sitting room we enter through a logia onto a balcony 7 feet by 24 in size i BATH HOUSE west of the hotel is a bath house about 50 feet by 70 in size on three aidea are bath rooms and in the center is a plunge bath about 40 by 50 feet m size and five feet deep the bottom and aides are of red wood adjoining the bath house is an open pool feet by 60 in alize flize where all can bathe in Castilla fl health giving mineral waters to their hearts content in the rear oi the hotels and pavilion are a number of fina cottages and a general merchandise store THE many persons like the taste of the water when a little pepper and baltis added it has a laate resembling that of i chicken broth when the health giving properties of the water the delightful surroundings and all the modern conveniences of these springs are considered the conclusion that castilla is the health resort of the future for the west is a natural one |
