| Show UNWELCOME IF LIBERAL A new paper styled the provo city press put in an appearance in this city a couple of nights since we had occasion two weeks ago to refer to its coming and announced its probable political complexion che announcement no was made on the ground that one T L DAVIS who prides himself on the self assumed title of propeller was the moving spirit of the projected enterprise and every body acquainted with him knobb that ho is a hater of everything mormon except mormon lucre which he is never backward in soliciting whenever he starts out on a canvassing tour for booming purposes his conduct on the liberal side at the last nun cipal election in this city cannot readily bo forgotten by members of the peoples party who witnessed it DAVIS is by no means bright but he is an adept at iho of vilification and slang as his foul attacks on some of provos honored citizens in his stump utterance prior to the election demonstrated of course this man DAVIS name is not officially presented at the head of the editorial column we did not expect to see it there but he is nevertheless operating for and through the paper other parties are furnishing the names money and brains well this new candidate for public favor and patronage in its opening address announces that it will be liberal when the occasion demand it how long before the occasion demands it the writer fails to state will it not be whan the next provo election shall transpire or when its now manifest chief support in the shape of mormon patronage shall cease the ENQUIRER extends a cordial welcome to every honest newspaper enterprise that maybe started m city but it has not one word of welcome or encouragement for a paper that bears upon its face the impress of dishonesty and insincerity the ENQUIRER has through the years been an earnest champion and defender of the peoples party and of the peoples liberties it has undertaken time and again to raise a warning voice against the introduction or fostering of agencies inimical to the best interests and safety of that party and of the people generally and has the satisfaction of knowing that its course has on such occasions been invariably commended by all right minded men and women the simple announcement of this new applicant for public favor that it will be liberal might have no material effect on the relations of citizens politically or socially while in its incipiency but to hereafter encourage and maintain a paper that may continue to proclaim and advocate liberalism as the word is understood by the much wronged people of utah at least may result in much injury not only to law abiding citizens of all classes but to the city we are all now beamingly united in building up liberal methods nor liberal papers have proven of any benefit to this territory as the experience of salt lake and ogden fully attest on the contrary they have proven to be deadly evils their presence or influence has been folt the provo city press when it asserts it will be liberal means if it means anything that it will advocate and labor for the disfranchisement of all members of the peoples party it would propose to strip the men whose advertisements at present till its columns of not only their political rights I 1 but their religious social and property rights Is not this the platform and purpose of the liberal party and if the press will be liberal will not that be its purpose also unless this new comer in journalism should undergo a change of apart it will before the lapse of many weeks be advocating quite as vigorously as its older and more influential party organs 0 0 GOODWINS favorite schemes of the gin shop the gambling den the brothel and disfranchisement chi as the only certain means by which mormonism can be over let that change of heart come and THE ENQUIRER will cheerfully extend a fraternal fia greeting to the new comer As it is we cannot at present eay as does a local conte m horary welcome |
