By a recent decision of thc register and receiver of the local land office two important school land contests have been decided. The cases wero those of tho state of Utah against tho Columbus Colum-bus Consolidated Mining company and tho state of Utah against Howard 1'. Chappcll. In both cases the decision was against the state. Uofore Utah became a state sections 2 16. :J2 and 30 were set aside for school' purposes. It was stipulatod that should anv of tho land bo found to contain mineral or to bo advantageous for mining purposes, this would bo opon for claims. The two tracts of laud in question were of this sort. Tho land involved in the suit against tho Columbus Consolidated iMiuing company com-pany includes the well-known Flagstaff, Flag-staff, Toledo, South Star and Rough and Ready mines. Tho Chappoll case involved Custer No. 3, Custer No. 4 and Custer No. 14 mining claims in conflict with school flection 16, township town-ship 2S south, range -I west, Salt Lake meridian. Tho decisions moan that tho land in question will be used for placer purposes pur-poses as in the past. |
