According to' dispatches from Hoatlle, a portion of the costly jewelry found in the possession of Charles Cunningham Cunning-ham of Salt Lake, when ho was arrested ar-rested by the federal custom officers, charged .with smuggling opium, has been identified as that supposed to have boon Ktolen from Cunningham and two women companions at Saltair beach last August 8. This disclosure, according to the local authorities, confirms con-firms the '.suspicions freely voiced at the time of tho alleged rubbery that Cunuiuuliam and his womon companions compan-ions concocted a fake robbery in an attempt to swindle the Saltair Beach company in a claim for damages. Jewels Disappear. Cunningham accompanied two women, to the beach and checked their valuables val-uables at the check window before they went in bathing. At tho window Cunningham Cun-ningham took back a package- containing contain-ing only gravel. The jewels, said to to-tal to-tal .2(3i)0 worth, were gone. Mystery surrounded tho disappc-auce disappc-auce of tho jewelry until tho authorities authori-ties learned that Cunningham had returned, re-turned, to the chock window ten minutes min-utes aftor depositing the valuables and had recheeked them. The intimation was made openly then that Cunningham had taken the valuables himself. He was arrested, charged with tho robbery, but was released on habeas corpus proceedings pro-ceedings and the case was dropped, the womon refusing to prosecute. The women wom-en cave their names as Mirs. M. Ward and Mrs. L. 11. Harrison, both of Memphis. Mem-phis. Tcnn. It has transpired since the robbery, declare the authorities, that one of these women, under the name- of Marine Mar-ine Dale opened a house in East First South street nnd was driven driv-en from the city by the police last February. Cunningham left Salt Lake at the same timo and is said to have accompanied the Dale woman to the northwest. Identification Made. The identification of the jewels by tho custom officers at Seattle yesterday was accomplished through tho co-operation of United States Marshal James H. Anderson of Salt Lake, who wired a description of the diamonds figuring in tho Saltair "robbery," to the Seattle federal ofllccrs. A7uong the articles identified were a loose diamond worth $800, several lesser diamonds, a diamond dia-mond locket and chain and a seal ring. Cunningham was arrested in Seattle a month ago in connection with an extensive ex-tensive opium smuggling conspiracy unearthed by the government officials. Thirty-fivo cans of opium Tverc found in one of his suit cases, llo is being held for investigation on other charges, the nature of -which have not been divulged. |
