Sullivan, ; secretary of tho Amateur Athletic union, in a letter on tho subject made public hero today. "It Is a mistake to havo a man, for example, in a girls' gymnasium, or to coach or direct girlG In their athletic ath-letic exorcises. "A man coach In a girls' school will naturally prosont. his theories from ft masculine standpoint. Ho will tell his pupils to play a good rough gamo and instruct them to do things us a boy or a man would do them. Girls' athletics, when conducted along safe and sano lines, aro a real benefit to tho health of the girls. They must not bo exploited, ex-ploited, howover. as female Sandowa, Sheppards, Shoridans or us show girls. A girls' basketball team must not bo trained in tricks, nor should it bo sent around tho country to exhibit tho play-era play-era for gato money. "Competition for glrlo should bo in Its own group and in private without an admission foe and without tho sensatlon-eeeklng sensatlon-eeeklng crowd. Girls should bo kept In their own group and not bo permitted to take part In public sport3." |
