Kundell, Abraham Speaking particularly of ono request recoived at this office, it was specially asked that we publish the Woodruff manifesto of 1SD0, as it is officially recorded re-corded at tho Mormon church historian histo-rian s office, and we therefore present that document in full, together with the method of its adontion by the church in conference: To Whom It May Concern: Prosa dispatches having been sent for political purposes from Salt Lake City, which have been widely published, to the effect that the Utah Commission In their recent report to the Secretary of tho Interior, In-terior, allege that plural marrlagos are still being solemnized and that forty or more such marriages have been contracted con-tracted in Utah since last June or during dur-ing tho past year: also that in public discourses dis-courses the leaders of tho church have taught, encouraged and urged tho continuance con-tinuance of the practice of polygamy; I. therefore, as Presldont of the Church of Jesus Christ of Luttor-day Saints, do hereby, in the most solemn manner declare de-clare that these charges are falso. We aro not teaching polygamy, or plural marriage, mar-riage, -nor permitting any person to enter en-ter Into Us practice, and 1 deny that either forty or any other number of plural marriages have during that period been solemnized in our teniplo or in any other place In the Territory. One ghkq has been reported. In which the parties alleged that the marriage was performed in the Kndowment house, in Salt Iikc. City, In the spring of 1889. ,but. 1 have not been able to learn who performed tho coromony; whatever waH dono in this matter was without, my knowledge. In consequence of this alleged al-leged occurrence I ho IOndowment house was by my Instructions taken down without with-out delay. Inasmuch aa laws have boon enacted by Congress forbidding plural marriage, which laws have been pronounced constitutional con-stitutional by the court of last resort. I hereby declaro my Intention to submit to those. laws and to use my Influence with the members of the church over which 1 preside to have them do likewise. like-wise. There Is nothing in my teachings to Hie church or in those of my associates, during dur-ing the timo specllled, which can reasonably reason-ably be construed to inculcate or encourage en-courage polygamy, and when any Elder of tho church has used language which appeared to convoy an. such leaching lie has noon pronipllv reproved. And I now publicly declare that, my advlcu to the Latter-day Saints Is to refrain from contracting con-tracting any marriage forbidden by the law of the land. WILFORD WOODRUFF, President of tho Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Snints. Tho above manifesto was road on October (5, ISDU, to the Mormon conference confer-ence then in session, and Lorenzo Snow thereupon offered tho following, which was sustained unanimously: "I move l hat, recognizing W II ford Woodruff au the president of the Church of Joans Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I lie only man on the earth at (he present time who holds the. keys of thu sealing ordinances, we consider him fully authorised author-ised by virtue of his position to. issue tho manifesto which tins boon road In our lio.-ulng und which Is dated September 2i. 1SH0. and thai- as a church In general conference, assembled wo accept liln declaration concerning plural marriage as authoritative nnd binding." |
