from the gaa ward this made nineteen members a bare quorum the platform of principles of alie peoples party county as prepared by the executive committee was presented by chairman king aa follows PLATFORM we the representatives of the peoples party of utah county in convention assembled do submit ane following declaration of principles 1 we are profoundly grateful to the director of all things for the peace that prevails in our land the prosperity of our beautiful commonwealth and tha liberty vouchsafed to us in the constitution ution of our country we recognize a divinely inspired instrument it is the safeguard of the peoples liberty and waa ordained and established to secure the protection of life and property and maintain unimpaired the heritage of american freedom with sincere regret we bew the growing disloyalty to the fundamental law ot the land and the disinclination of powerful parties to respect its limitation the sovereign ity ot th eState is being infringed and the liberties of the people jep by the enactments ot the federal government I 1 we believe it to be the duty of all citizens to respect the law and obey all laws passed in pursuance of the conati aution of our country 3 we recognize the necessity of congressional legislation for alie territories luring the period of their infancy and inability through the lack of wealth resources and population to govern them selves but to continue suan legislation after the necessity ceases to exist and to deny them admission into the union ia io contravention of the spirit of the Constitution the policy of the united states and is un and unjust utah territory possesses every qualification essential to putting on the robes of statehood and condemn the gross injustice perpetrated by our national legislature in admitting merely for political purposes to the sisterhood ot states territories far below utah in all the essentials of statehood 4 we denounce any local party or fac tion which uses its influence and power to nullify the wishes of the majority oi the people and prevent our territory from the enjoyment of its political heritage as an alien to our commonwealth a toe to liberty and an enemy to progress peace and social harmony 5 all political power we declare to be with the people we deny that in utah the churan dominates the state and affirm that no church should direct in civil matters nor exercise political influence freedom of speech and thought are essential to the maintenance a free government and all citizens in the selection of civil offices in tha exea cise of the their ground with the aal airs of state in political thought and action should be free independent and C ve denounce the unholy alliance of citizens of our territory formed only for the purpose of subjugating an honeas earnest industrious people the fires of per ee cution wresting by fraud control from the majority satiating an inardi nate lust for the spoils of the so called liberal party perpetuates frauds defies election laws and oaths makes perjuries per juries aa common aa bad pence robs voters of their ballots foments strife and discord thus discouraging in vestments by outside capital and seeks by treasonable and un american methods to steal away the franchise of those who differ from it in political or reli gioda views the liberal party is a party without principles without a platform it has but one purpose the dis traction of the mormon church to accomplish com this end it resorts to trickery and fraud not content with legitimate means it loudly demands of the nation the dis franchis of the majority of the people of utah it feeds and fattens i oh un american unholy and unpatriotic achievements 7 we believe that so long as we are menaced by so deadly a as it does the civil political and religious rights of a people actuated by a deter mined purpose to reduce the people to a condition of serfdom the interests of self defence will prompt thein to a union of action in order to more effectually resist such tyranny by every lawful means for only by such resistance can the constitution bs upheld and the blessings of liberty be per to them and their poster ity 8 the extension 01 the elective franchise should he sought and we condemn the narrow and contracted policy belonging to dark ages and formed hy the liberal party which has led to the disfranchisement chi of women 9 we congratulate the peoples party for the great york accomplished it has given good government it has encouraged industry the development of the resources of the territory and the building up of our glorious commonwealth it has not been oppressive nor has it formed discriminating legislation it has fostered public institutions it has ever declared in favor of economy in the administration of public concerns liast taxation and a government economically administered has been its motto in municipal county and territorial affairs its administration has been characterized by honesty efficiency and a doe regard for the public weal 10 the condition of our county is a subject of congratulation under the peoples rule it has grown to its present splendid proportions prosperity and peace abound wealth is increasing industries dus tries are being planted and resources develop edThe county is free from debt public buildings have been erected roads and bridges have received e attention atte ution quarantine regulations have been rigidly been wisely governed taxes have been low public expenditures have been carefully scrutinized and wisely made officials have been zealous to trust scandals and corruptions corrupt ions haye been un gnoun 11 we believe that all pasoua are equal before the law that offices do not belong to the few and that honesty integrity and competency should be the qualifications sought for in all selected for positions of public trust 12 we believe that our public school system should be fostered and education placed within reach of all we declare in favor of county public buildings as far aa the gro rth of the county requires we favor the improvements of highways and bridges that atrayel may be increased ty 13 we belive in the encouragement of railroads and all other enterprises leading to the advancement of the county 14 health and quarantine regula iiona should be strictly enforced 15 we believe that all members of the re oplas party should possess courage and manifest feally and devotion to their bartys interests the importance of harmony in party action must be apparent to all and to secure
