Show the fourth at feln editor ENQUIRER i if uncle sam or any of our cousins who think we are not patriotic and loyal had been in our midst last friday they would lave changed their minds leiai on t day had one of the grandest celebrations ever seen in this city daring ahe small hours of the mornier mor nimr alie auni poured forth their noise and smoke making it impossible for any common to get any sleep at sunrise the bands were out and serenaded the citizens until 10 when the deome gathered for the procession the parade by the lelii silver hand then took up the line of march the hoys were all smiling because they have a new band wagon it is a daisy aud they have j ast cause to be proud 0 it followings Fol lowins the band came the goddess of liberty mrs sarah evains in an elaborate car gen washington and wife gen lafaette and other historic personages were well represented in the procession mr frank jacobs and mrs sophia devaus as powhatan and pocahontas did exceedingly well and are worthy of special mention thirteen young ladies and escorts on horseback represented the thirteen original states the other states and territories were also welt shown the old cannon waa seen among the throng looking as grim and terrible as ever the trades and tradesmen each occupying a handsomely decorated wagon up in fine shape alie procession marched through the principal streets and was seen by a large number of people and among them many strangers from the surrounding counties at 12 having readied alie grove they dispersed for dinner at 2 alie people assembled in mr J J thomas apple orchard the meeting was called to order by the chairman mr F trane A nicely selected and arranged pro gramme was then carried out the oration by prof J M anderson was a masterly effort it was followed by patriotic speeches from israel evang sen A B anderaon And ereon john wood house and andrew R anderson the musical eions were also our silver band did itself proud they played some of the finest selections ever heard here the tuba solo by mr andrew fjelland Fjeld and bariton solo by mr I 1 J taylor were well rendered in the evening the people gathered at smiths hotel to witness the display 0 fireworks fire works the day closed with a grand ball in the opera house which was well attended and duly appreciated by those i present the day passed off quietly and pleasantly no accident to ua i pleasure of alie day the committees worked like beavers to make the thing a success aad their efforts were greatly appreciated by the citizens A new committee has been appointed to get up a celebration for the twenty fourth and we hope it may be as successful as the one held last friday JAY LEIH july |
