Show ITS VAIN DENIALS. ' ' On Tuesday evening the Desorct News filed its objections to certain general statements made recently in Tho Tribune, these relating t.o the propositions that the law should be equally enforced, the News denying that the church has been intruding in business and in politics, to charge which, it says, "is a slur on the church," and its claim that Americanism American-ism has been a detriment to the State. iu support of its 'first proposition, that The Tribune is not in favor of the equal enforcement of tho law, it citea the "rcdlight district," and claims that The Tribune has not called for the enforcement of the law against that district, li alleges as evidence of that charge that the- rcdlight district has the indorsement of American party leaders; "some say that prominent officials offi-cials are even financially interested in it." Here, however, the News mi&scs the point of its own statement; for even granting its truth respecting "rominent officials (which we by no means do), that docs not show that The Tribune is opposed to the enforcement enforce-ment of. the law against the redlight district. On the contrary,! The Tribune is absolutely and unqualifiedly in favor of the enforcement of the law there as elsewhere. The quest ion of the rcdlight district was taken into the District Court, and put. into the hands of the sheriff of this county. This officer proceeded to tear down a portion of the construction, and announced that he would never more permit any opening of that district. The Tribune would bo glad to see that proclamation of the sheriff maintained. It would be glad to see the officers of every degree do their dutv with respect to I he red-li-' l. district, as with respect to every offender against the law. What the News endeavors to do in all this business, busi-ness, -is to make capital against the American purly, rather than to advance ad-vance the cause of morality; but il must necessarily fail in its political dodge, since Ihc Americans .. were tho first to make declaration against the redlight district. The matter having been put by the court in charge of the nhnili', and the sheriff having assumed jurisdiction, we deny the propriety of charging any evil conditions that may exist thctc now against tho American party. The News bases its editorial largely upon the assumption that the American party or Tho Tribune is making war on the church. This, as wo have constantly con-stantly stated, is absolulcly untriie. The lust Amorican platform made this very clear, and every platform of the American party has disclaimed any attempt at-tempt to inlerfcro with . anyone's religion or with the religious activities ac-tivities of any church. The constant con-stant attempt of the News to fasten upon the American parly lhe""stigma of religious persecution must absolutely absolute-ly fail, because there is nothing what ever upon which to base the charge. As (o its being a slur on the church o ehargo it with .in lrusionf upon busi ' ness and politics, the fact rcmaitiH, and the truth should be no sjur. But oven so.( Tho Tribune i.s by no moans alone in thai. The fact of .such intrusion i.s so evident, it . has been so widely recognized, it is so thoroughly demonstrated demon-strated that Ihc church docs intrude iu business and politics, that it is a wasto of t iino and -space to discu&s the matter. The eloquent speech of Elder Brigham il. Uoberts, first president of the seTculics, delivered iu the Theater iu this city near the close of tho recent campaign, was based explicitly upou .this very intrusion in politics. The intrusion in business is clear from the manifold presidencies of the president presi-dent of tho .Mormon church of nu-morons nu-morons business enterprises. It is idle to deny fads that are so absolutely absolute-ly ojoar and plain as all these. Tho curious fallacy that has been projected Utf the News from time to t ime since I he census returns wore published, pub-lished, that tie American party and The Tribune have attempted lo hold back progress and sett lenient in this Stale, is repeated again in the cditorinl of Tuesday night. Siin'-e, however, I he only portions of the State showing any marked progress arc those portions which are especially affected by and siipporl Americanism and The Tribune, the only great and vital progress being in these very portions, it is a waste of effort for (he News lo underiake any argument on this point. Surely if Americanism and. The Tribune influence in-fluence were bad, that influence would be bnd wh'ero Americanism prevails and where The Tribune has its chief circulation and support. The very opposite op-posite is true. It is precisely where Americanism prevails and where Tho Tribuno is most largely read and supported sup-ported that, the chief progress is shown. The State al largo shows a .progress of "o.7 per cent outside of Salt Lake City. Jn Salt Lake City, the seat of Americanism and progress, tho gain was 7.'5.;t per cent. Tf is precisely where Americanism was least known and understood, and where The Tribune Trib-une is least read, that the stagnant conditions were most in evidence. In view of these fads, it is certainly astonishing to see the News bring this matter up constantly, when it is so easy lo refute its allegations, and where Iho facts themselves tiro so absolutely ab-solutely decisive against il. |
