Show A FULL confession made by one of the D R d train robbers THE ENQUIRER MAX interviews HIM IN THE JAIL the story of the holdup hold up from the beginning to the end sheriff fowler returned to provo sunday morning on the D E G from his thompsons Thomp sons springs and rocks with deputy pratt and joseph B nay the latter being one of the train robbers who held up the D R G on the ath of last month aiom the sheriff we learn eliat the chain of evidence is now complete in this case and that the bona fide robbers are now in jail young nay is one or these and a fellow arrested last week in ogden for robbery is another this batters lat name is ed dayton sheriff fowler happened to know the parents of youad nay and it was this fact that led him into the full confidence of young nay and the subsequent confession of the whole affair being made by him the ENQUIRER man went to the county jail this morning and talked to jos B nay a young man 18 years of age one of the two who took part in the affair and learned from him the following story about of last june ed dayton alias fiaher called at the home of my parents while they were living at dolores river sage hea flat a place about five milea below the big bend he stayed there two aweeka with the folks before making known his real object he said how would you like to go with me and hold up the D R G train I 1 replied athali had never done anything of the kind he then said all that I 1 want you for is for company and just do what I 1 tell you he promised me half of what he got if I 1 would go and I 1 con dented the conversation took place outside of the house between us two we left alie sama night I 1 told my folks that I 1 was going to bico to work a place in colorado we went to new mexico first where we stayed two weeks and changed horses then we went to the blue mountains where we remained three weeks when we went to thomp sons borines So rines the scene of the hold up the time it took us to go from the blue mountains to thompsons Thomp sons springs was three night we traveled in tl e night time and rested in the day dayton told me he had been in the business about six years wo got at thompsons Thomp sons springs at daylight two days before the hold up we stayed there two days to allow our forsea to rest we tied our borss yards from the track and about three miles from the depot and then walked back to the station we waited about half an hour before the train arrived and stayed by the water tank As the train glowed up we got on behind the tender when we boarded the train we put on our masks which we had made at moab the night beare dayton then climbed over the tender and held up the engineer when the train stopped at the third bridge where our horses were I 1 jumped off the fireman and engineer came down from the tender followed by dayton we both had colts 45 and dayton had a 44 winchester also dayton told me to watch the engineer and fireman while he went to the express car when he went to the express car he rapped on the door with bj his dea marid with two shots the engineer and fireman said that they guessed h was too scared to talk dayton then told the firemen to pet his ax and break down the door he did so but could not penetrate htwe then shot about twenty five rounds into the car Seeing the messenger could not be aroused dayton told the engineer to get a sack and go with him through the cars and left me holding up tho fireman dayton returned on the outside with the engineer the fireman and engineer then went on the engine and we got on our horses and headed for the bine mountains we stayed there about three days and then put out for the dolores river finally reaching montrose col we heard men talking about the robbery all along the road but no one it was us we left montroes Mont roee and headed for ogden where we arrived on the ast 1st ef the month we stayed there till thursday when deputy pratt and sheriff belnap arrested us on the complaint of ed chapman of cortez colorado charging us with the robbery thia chapman saw us after the robbery was committed and knew all about the affair he happened to be in ogden and saw us on the street and then gave information to the authorities which caused our arrest we each had our shooters aix in ogden the officers have got mine but dayton had his stolen just before hig arrest my bora gave out eleven miles from thompsons Thomp sons springe and dayton said he would go along to courthouse rocks and that the first two horses he could gat he would come back with he then left me ijler my borao fourteen miles when I 1 met dayton under a tree we then counted the money there was 70 in 5 in gold and balance in ailder and 8 watches we divided up the money sold one watch and threw the other four away |
