Show REPUBLICS DEFEAT helena montana held a municipal election last Monda yand now that the result is known it is fondd that tho republicans are snowed under badly of course it was only a city election and the fact that the democrats had merely a majority of about three hundred would not seem a great thing to boast of so it is not but it must be remembered that the republicans have heretofore carried the city with a majority of four hundred and th at they counted on the city as one of the strongholds strong holds of their party in the abw state of montana it is especially unfortunate to re publicans public ans at the present moment for the city to turn democratic because the contest of tho mantana election cases now being waged in the senate is supposed to lend an influence with the inhabitants of the new slate which will tend to govern the next general election held there all eyes have been turned to the city of helena for a forecast of what the next political issue will be and now that tho election has resolved itself in favor of the principles of democracy it seems quite a sure thing that montana will declare herself democratic by the next state election it may not much tho election cases baing discussed by the senate as the republicans seem determined to seat their men simply because they have a majority it seems and therefore aro able to do so but the outrage will not bo accepted by citizens of montana in the same spirit that was anticipated THE PEOPLE of chicago are not loosing their interest in the least in the big show which has fallen on their hands it is now rumored that n special of the legislature of the state of illinois will shortly convene to enact f law giving tho chicagoans tho special privilege of levying u heavier tax than what the law now allow sin order to defray the expenses of the exposition the rea sons set forth for such a law are good ones the big show will benefit all classes and it is therefore no more than right that the city defray tho expenses by an oqual tax otherwise the burden would fall on a few pub lic spirited men as is generally the case in public enterprises where business is done by donation while others would enjoy the benefits tins WEEK there have been several noted mrm cipal elections throughout the country which have resulted in the republicans in almost every instance and in ono or two cities they have been badly snowed under by the democratic votes lj SEEMS to be a sure thing that the present congress will do something substantial in the way of silver legislation thirteen senators are now to work preparing a bill which they think will command a majority vote of congress |
