Show SUNDAY MEETINGS continuation of the 0 ider ence services IY WOODRUFF alio given the great concourse of people As semlin hall services SATURDAY SNOW said it was I 1 wonderful to contemplate the advance made by the church during the sixty years of its existence the path by which the saints could secure the exaltation which they all so fondly for was laid out for them before the existence of this world and before the morning stars sang together tiie lord bad made known this path and their success depended upon own efforts it ans not known by this people whether or not they are going into captivity and this was for alie best if the saints had known of the fiery trials through which they must pass the prospects would to say the least have been very di couras mg so in regard to the future ke would not wish to know what bo in store for him or what might be required of him lint he knew that whenever in the past he had needed alie assistance of the lord lie always received it this church would never 10 placed in such a position that its members could not secure the highest blessings ever bestowed upon man for GOO years before alie coming of the yon of god alie jewish nation became very wicked and finally god became angry that people and told them that they should be led into captivity for seventy years during thair period of captivity alie people were progressing and the duwer of god was frequently manifested and when the time of deliverance came they were a great and powerful people alie sainta had no need to be troubled about the future for alie purposes of god in reference to this people would be carried out after listening to the powerful testimonials had been borne during this conference he wondered what could ever overthrow it he closed by urging the saints to be and true that they might come out victorious GEORGE Q CANNON was the next speaker he said the remarks made by alie speakers at this conference had been accompanied by the spirit of god they had been told eliat it was not alie privilege of alie few to have a testimony as to the truth of alie work but of all in this respect the church stood alone in a majority of alie churches men were employed to preach to their congregations and were employed because of their eloquence in all meetings of tho saints there should be the plainest talk they biad had re proofs administered to them during this conference because of their mode of life blessed were alic people who had men in their midst who dare tell them alie such men had always been among the saints they could see the abisa in the path of the people and it was their duty to give a warning there lias never been an hour since the organization of the church when the counsel of heaven could not be obtained by those who stood in need of it and it would be so until christ came to reign in person it was in the manner that the biad been led from the beginning it had not been governed by man s wisdom some remarks had been made during this conference regarding the increase of luxuries among the people the saints were suddenly becoming rich many who recently were working for their bread were now worth thousands wealth was good under certain circumstances cum stances and thore was no impropriety in alio people being rich for wealth would never be dangerous to the saints unless it created class distinctions but if it lifted one class above another then there would be great danger of its becoming acurso rather alian a blessing the elders had carried the gospel to all classes but the rich would not receive it because in contact with pride and their vanity while alio poor and the meek biad gathered to zion they had done all in their power to convert the richand if they had failed it was not their fault one of the first eiven to the church was tint should consecrate their surplus property to god and if was to be distributed among tiie poor who needed it joseph smith labored diligently to bring the people up to that law in traveling around the speaker frequently bieard the saints say they washed they could have the united order among them but that order could not be established without preparation as their own experience showed he did not look for any such tiling as the ushering in or the united order until tiie people had made great progress was faith enough among them to make them willing to put their surplus wealth into a fund for the good of zion there was a constant cry for means in every direction and if tiie church biad a millica dollars under ity control it could he all spent in works which would result in benefit to the people church schools or academies had recently been established in nearly every county and means haq needed to sustain them then there was some talk of establishing a stake of zion in palestine and manufactories manu factories were needed among tho people it was also probable that tiie saints would soon be deprived of the franchise without regard to practices and billa had been introduced in congress for eliat purpose but at the same time it would not be an unmixed evil and lie could view the prospect complacency aliis was because lie did not fisli to see class distinctions among the people as was apt to be the case where some of the saints had the franchise and others ft ere of it that ass shown by feelings which exist among the former class to relegate alio latter to the rear he viewed with distrust anything which tended to create inequalities among tiie people he closed by invoking the blessings of god upon tho saints said that heretofore it had been the custom to present the authorities and reports of the stakes on alie sabbath day he it would be letter to transact that busi naps on some other day and failed ap on president cannon to acal the reports said that complete reports from all alie stakes had not been received ant read the fol lofting general summary FINANCIAL HEI casu on hand at time of last report 00 property permitted to meet favorable circumstances I 1 want to say to the congregation as a president of the church that no man has authority to instruct this people without the spirit of god I 1 need the spirit as much as the least of you the prophet prop heu acera and revelatory of every age have had authority to administer in their several spheres and have done so through alie spirit joseph smith had this authority and lie was humble all the priesthood should feel humble for tha kingdom of god does not depend on any man the lord almighty has power in himself to keep up liis church I 1 have marveled many times that I 1 stand before the church as I 1 do it is not a position that I 1 have sought for but it must he the work of god and I 1 feel that it is a responsible position it has been my lot with many ot hersto preach the gospel to the inhabitants of the earth we have alie bible the stick of juda the library which was burned extinct with all researches it contained yet the bible lias remained unto the inhabitants of alie earth this is the law unto us besides the bible wo have other works which contain the word of god these show us what will como in the future tibey are the revelations of god and they will be fulfilled whether people believe them or not we have also biad the word of the lord through president Young who led us for many ye arsand so we also had the word of bod from fres taylor men taught by the anilu euce of alie holy ghost I 1 would say unto the tuf this sixty millions of people in our country to the kings and potentates of the earth dont worry about this churchia church If it is not of the lord it will not do any harm but if it is of the lord aliat arc yun a boing to do about atit is a power which hell combined cannot overcome that god which lias the world in the past still liolis its destiny today to day and we arc in his hands in all the history of the world the work of the lord laid been seemingly an uphill business now hr ethern and sisters this id the work of god and liis people is called to warn alie people of this age and I 1 declare as an apostle of the lamb of god eliat aliey are responsible eliat inhabitants of alio world lo 10 warned we are liere ou a mission and we are not to remain here luna but we will have to go into the spirit world to live there for eternity with alie just if our lives aeve been upright it has cost something to shed the blood of joseph smith and it is not entirely paid yet no the inhabitants of the earth do not know what is ia batore for them alie lord said to joseph that lie would prune the vinyard do the inhabitants of the earth realize this 1 say they do not wo leave come to this desert country because the spirit has moved upon us and this church is to prepare for the coming ot alie son of man we have come here for a great purpose and if we do not abide after the word of god we will be punished well br ethern and sisters let me exhort you to be faithful for thin is a great responsibility we have taken upon us according to the life we lad we wilt receive a st a men will have a glory kind if they have not clr d innocent blood are become children of perdition brethren and lay these things ta heart let ua try to serve god I 1 kaow this Is the wark of alie lord if we do clr duty we TV ill come out all right I 1 will leave these remarks you brethren aud bisters I 1 pray god to bless you and if wo are faithful zion will conquer may god give us wisdom and truth to understand all things for christs chris ts sake amen APOSTLE I 1 1 fed it ia au inestimable blessing to hayo the privilege to listen to the truths Q have just heard they are hie truths irom heaven and I 1 wish to test ay iy to it president been in this work nearly sixty years and I 1 leave been in it for about two years we both know that this it i t ane of the lord many of alio people A ho live in these lands now do not know of the trials which the church in the eastern states we have had here a period or prosperity and in many cases our children have grown ap not in alie walks of the lord ahen we came hero va bere blessed with peace and our rulers were appointed from among our own and we enjoyed superlative healthy ow when there agu great influx of means in our midst many forget blessings and forget to pray we know that when there is ft storm and we wish to send a telegraph message and cannot get an answer we then know that lie wire is down or theia something wrong so it will bo with us if we fail to pray aud cannot get the communication of the spirit you remember that some few years ago an apostle taught that christ was not but a common man for he removed from his position tins then made a great impression on me I 1 asked myself what I 1 knew of the great Ile deemer and diligently sought to and him and I 1 now know he is a person of power and might the condition of the world is such that they will not listen to his word what will we then do let us do as our leader has said let us go to the dead and seek records for them there is nothing that gives us more satisfaction than knowing this gospel is from god the people here have been mixed ap but have not received the blessings of god promis bously lie has sifted them anil those that have sold their brethren in n or forty dollars a head are now i ing with the other side we cant al 1 to neglect the work of god may tit be our happy lot not to neglect our duty is my grayer in llie name of jesus am en ELDER announced that the committee appointed to arrange for the comfort of visitors tois would be found at the
