was administered by the bishopric of the ward of salt lake PRESIDENT Q CANNON the first speaker said in the 27 chapter of the book of mosiah in the book of mormon we find the record of the visitation of an angel to alma I 1 will read commencing at the nineteenth paragraph the speaker here read the portion of the cli apter referred to in standing up this afternoon atter noon I 1 feel in great need of the blessings that the exercise of faith may bring this is a vast audience and a man may well shrink from dressing it when we look back since the church was organized sixty years ago we can see how wonderfully god lias watched over the church and guarded the people from the many anarea in their pathway it is interesting to look back on such a day as the past career of the church god in his infinite inerny revealed this great work to joseph smith and the success it should meet with in the earth while he was under the spirit of prophecy he has foretold many things that have been fulfilled to the very letter the sixty years now passed give us great bonfi diance for the future because these principles are now firmly rooted in the earth abo gospel which we have embraced is the eternal truth of haayen we stand on the eternal rock of truth no matter what may be saida against us it is a consolation that we stand on eo firm a rock aliese truths must live they cannot be covered up this alie bible is our book there is not a truth in it that does not belong to oswe embrace it all or god has embodied them in the religion which he hag revealed to us we have also received another book the book of mormon which the world generally consider a mith or a fable but nevertheless this book contains the principles of righteousness and of the truth there is not a single word that does not read beautiful and teach man to lead a purer life there might be some history in it that is not acceptable to prudish people ajit it is nevertheless true lii story we learn that in it the principles of the goabel are taught very plainly we learn what form of baptism aind who should be baptized as cil as all the first principles of the grapel I 1 need only refer to a few to show llie clearness of the explanation Tilt speaker then coin pared the prevalent pr evelent belief rf what is with the teachings tea chinga of the book of monnon also the belief that all would go to hell chyn not taught the principles of christ before their deaile god I 1 therefore he continued is very merciful that lia lias revealed the principles to ua in such purity they so fully satisfy aur inward arav anys and the principles fully give us the information we deabi c for the wor of god therefore libere is on happier people on the eartle than the latter day saints who could comprehend that we were with god in the in alie other world who compre hend god or the mission of jesus christ if it were not for these truths that he has revealed unto us if it were not for these god would cease to be a god in our estimation he would then be nothing but a monster to our imagination but god has revealed aliese his truths to ua so we can know him but they not alone to us these principles are extended to all the inhabitants of the earth if there is a people on earth that should rejoice how everit is the latter day Saints who posses cheso great truths and there should be a distinction between us and fhe world Br ethern should not practice all the little vices that belong to the world we should remember that there ia over two influences at work with us one for good and the other for evil I 1 feel that this is important for us to consider that we may keep in the right path there lias been much good instruction given i in this conference and let us keep the good influence with us after we leave here though we are in tribulations yet if we trust in god he wilt brine us out triumphant enow ia a good time to exhibit our religion by living up to it there never was a more favorable opportunity port unity let us therefore live up to it and prove to the world that they are the principles of divine truth I 1 pray god to help ua do this is my prayer in tiie name of jesus amen PRESIDENT before closing there is u few remarks that I 1 would like to make brother cannon has laid before us very plainly the ordinances of the house of is no change in these ordinances from the way they were presented in early times we often biear some one try to change the ordinance by argument but they are then doing wrong I 1 once heard an elder preach a new theory of the resurrection to thousands of people nest I 1 was asked what I 1 thought of it I 1 said that it was all damn none sense I 1 knew that it was not right for an elder that way but I 1 felt so there is but one theory of the gospel and that is the correct one if we hold on to that all will be well with us may god grant that the saints may hold on to these truths is my prayer amen the choir sang an anthem and the conference was adjourned till october ath with benediction by elias moms ASSEMBLY HALL the overflow meeting held in the assembly hall was well attended and all available room taken elder C W penrose the faist
