Show THE WORK OF TEACHERS remarks of interest at the last convention future plans utah county teachers association met on saturday march 9 in the fourth ward school house bupt supt wilson presiding the room was well filled with teachers and brigham young academy normal students prof giles gave a new school song entitled oh the flag of our country after which he reviewed some of the aings given before prof giles then gave a short sketch of his visit to the schools of chicago he baye a beautiful account of the children marching the excellent order and the neat and clean appearance of the proper has schools eacle one of which has something like one thousand children there are about one hundred ou the suburbs making two hundred schools in all of ourse the houses are fitted up with everything that a wealthy american city mould deem necessary for the benefit of the schools eich room contains about fifty or sixty children graded so nicely eliat they beem to be about the same age and size each child sits alone which lielas materially materi illy in maintaining good order whery 1 child is not able to dress respectably the board of education furnishes it baich clothes all the teachers are instructed in music and teach it in their grades tint there are special teachers in that branch who call every week and examine the children to see if the department teacher has given the planned work an bacal culture is given in the same way in matters of discipline chicago teachers are ahead of ours because facilities give them that advantage but by noticing the answers given by the children mr giles considered their class I 1 work no better than ours and in some instances not so good all the in chicago work on the same plan which is much the same as ours mr roylance then rendered a sons entitled utah after which dr james E talmage gave a very fine lecture on the subject of evolution at the alosa of the lecture mr rees moved that the association express their appreciation of the treat it had received from dr talmage by one word grand which was carried it was the desire of the association that the lecture be published in pamphlet form that each teacher I 1 might have a chance to again read that masterpiece and then lay t away among his scraps dr talmage thanked the assembly for its kind expression and said hb would endeavor to get the lecture ready for there is in a reading lesson unless the teacher leads him to notice and think it over for himself N L nelson had found that grown pupils as well as small ones read according to sound and not according work of last autumn had been he said that fie executive committee had drafted apian of work for I 1 the spring labors there would be a lecture at each session the school fair designed to be held in may must no be considered the committee for eliat consisted of the principals it was decided eliat the committee on fair should meet in prove on the evening of march 22 in the office of G W brimhall the subject of a summer institution must also be considered mr brimhall gave it as his opinion that pleasant valley would be one of the nicest places for that we could invite other counties to join with us and have lectures from each county taking part the people of that place would welcome such a convention and we could probably get excursion rates on the railroad they have two nice halls there which they have kindly offered for our service most of the members were in favor of pleasant valley the matter lio wever would be considered at another time bupt supt wilson announced that a
