Show distressing ACCIDENTS A child falls prom si third story window shortly before 2 yesterday afternoon a frightful accident occurred at the st elmo hotel corner third south and main streets it seems that mrs B E buell who occupied a room on the third floor facing south was at the window play ing with her IS months old the wire screen at the window was apparently secure but it was one of those swinging affairs and just at a moment when the mother had released her hold upon the baby the little ono threw itself forward against the screen which swung outward and the child fell from the window to the ground below a distance of thirty feet in falling its head struck against the sharp edge of a window bill on alie second floor and it alighted on its sido and head J J brennen who was standing in the street saw the child as it fell and rushed forward to catch it but was to late J N sarr picked the baby up and at first it appeared lifeless but soon commenced to gasp he carried it back to the room from which it had fallen but a few minutes before and placed it upon jhb bed As soon as the accident occurred the mother rushed into her sisters room and soon fainted when she recovered she was beside herself with graaf and all efforts to quiet her were unavailing drs pinkerton douglas and harvey were called in and made an examination of the childs injuries they found that the skull was badly fractured on the base of the brain and the brain exposed for an inch and in addition to this there were of course serious internal injuries the physicians agreed anat there was but little chance of savine the childs life and stated that the only thing that could be done v be to perform an operation to remove the pressure of the bones from the brain mr cuell the father of the child arrived when this announcement was made and sent for dr hamilton who performed the operation mr and mrs buell are from brooklyn and came here from bulte OB thursday to seccie the right tu sell a preparation for cleaning silver ware at the fair mr buell is a nephew of B A M Froese tb of this city both father and mother had hopes that the life of their little one might be saved by the operation at a late hour last night the little ones condition had improved considerably but the physician expressed no hope for its ultimate recovery RUN OVER AND KILLED L D watson and his son ernest were coming down a canon near beaver yesterday morning with a load of logs when they were thrown from the daffon and both run over the father es with some severe bruises but hia on was so seriously injured that he had in four hours the boy was only 14 years old 5 L tribune |
