BEVERLY, Mass., Juno 27 The. serl- j ous conditon of Michael Thlsthwolla, an Italian laborer who was struck today by an automobile operated by Robert Taft, a son of President Taft, has caused a hurried change in the plans of the Taft family, who were preparing to depart for Now London tomorrow morning to attend tho Harvard -Yale regal Ul Thursday. Instead of attending the races, the family fam-ily will romaln at Beverly, unless thorc is an unexpected chango for the better in the man's condition. A report from Beverly hospital tonight was that his namo was on the dangorous list and ho had only a slight chanco of recovers'. Dr. S. J. Mlxlcr of Boston, sent at the request of tho president, arrived here late this afternoon. He is working with the hospital authorities, doing all that can bo dono for tho injured man. Robert Taft Is badly broken up over the affair and spent much of this afternoon at the hospital. Young Man Grievod. Chief of Police Ferguson has received Instructions through the president's attorney at-torney to see that the Injured man Is given every possible attention until his arrival, when he will take care of tho matter himself. Roburt has been in conference con-ference with the chief sovonil times and refused to go out In tho automobile again today. Secretary King of the board of trade received word from tho president's secretary sec-retary today slating that the president would arrive at Beverly early Wednesday morning. Robert Taft, with two college friends, Lendal King of Minneapolis and George Harrison of Washington, started out from the summer white house this morning for a spin along tho Massachusetts north shore. Robert, who has been driving tho car about tho city considerably since his arrival last week, was at tho steering wheel. At Pride's Crossing, anout two miles from home, the streets were being oiled. Tho automobile was slowed down. Tho horn sounded and most of tho men stepped aside. Ono of thorn, however, was not quick enough and the machine struck him, tossing him into tho gutter. Ho waa unconscious when picked up by Robert Taft and his friends. Tho man said that his namo was Michael Phlsth-wolla, Phlsth-wolla, A physician was summoned and the injured in-jured man sent to the hospital, while the president's son and his friends followed aftor. The surgeons at the hospital said tho skull appeared to be fractured aifd that the man was In a serious condition. All thoso who saw the affair said that it was purely an accident, that tho automobile auto-mobile was going slowly, and that the man stopped directly In front of it. |
