| Show S TV va dec 18 m A few daya ago a party of relic ato wee scouting and digging 1 island struck what ij to be the site ot one of the alcest villages of aborigines jet dis tero T ero a the ohio valley the village iia ee i laid off in rows and th middle of the island the s reeta or lanes began near the bank on fe hio side and cut the island ats right angles to tho west virginia shore ane first discovery and the one which brought relic hunters by the score to the scene was the skeleton of a full grown indian which bad been buried in a flitting position with his arms and accost rementa about him there were arrowheads and spear heads of flint a stone hatchet about 6 inches long a heavy stone hammer or axe and dozens of bead a of bone and of small shells of a shellfish unknown in these waters and many ot copper several fireplaces were uncovered around which were found bits of charcoal and thousands of and stone These places were believed to be the workshops for the manufacture manu of arrows hatchets etc quian a large number of household utensils and fragments of them were found borne of them would hold several gallons when whole etnere were probably drinking drin kine cups most of the ware had smooth surfaces and were made doubtless of clay other pieces were of deep bronze color composed of clay and shells and burned beveral of the larger pots were decorated in the herringbone herring bone pattern the figuers made by some sharp instrument while others it ere finished with a sort or network made perhaps by plated straw or thin willow twigs the prettiest and most valuable specimen now in the hands of dr grandee a dentist in this city is a small vessel about 5 or 6 in chea in length composed of a cement of clam shells and clay the vessel was the drinking cup of some chief it was in beautiful and artistic figures of small lizards raised on the outer surface the reptiles were made to appear riming up and down the sides of the vessel an artist of ent for an aborigine must have created the figures on the there were many other discoveries and the search would doubtless have proven of exceeding value had not the cold weather stopped it temporarily it is proposed 10 make the investigation complete in the spring |
