Show M 8 A conference the meetings were all well attended instructive REMARKS MADE by general aad stake officers ceiS of the association and by the stake presidency the young mens mutual improvement association conference for the utah stake of zion was held at the meeting house on Sunday commencing at 10 a m after the usual opening exercises abel J ayans addressed the meeting he compared the church of jesus christ of latter dav saints with the various churches of the world the gospel has to mankind in these latter days never more to he taken away if the people of the world accept pos pel it lays alie as at the root of the very tree on which they have built their faith ELDEK C felt that it was a task to instruct latter day saints in the principles of their religion for each one had the same source of information to draw from it I 1 knew exactly aliat would be for your best good 1 would try to assy that but as I 1 do not know I 1 will have to depend on the lord that he may guide my thoughts in the right direction those who are over us being inspired by truth and will bo enabled to guide us easely on to salvation we are convinced that the work ot the lord will progress and will never more be taken from the earth tuese promises are sure it ia good for us to have faith in god it is good for ug to have confidence ia those whom he lias placed over us the authorities of the church might instruct us correctly and yet we might fall by the wayside eacle one has an individual work to perform we must have alie whisperings of the spirit of god unto us individually to guide us correctly we must each of us discriminate between right and wrong we must each of us have an understanding of our individual aties in the kingdom of god we must each of us havo an individual testimony not only of the truth of the gospel but of our own individual doings I 1 find in my experience that we are all to a certain extent riven to selfishness we might be placed in a position where we would not do a wrong act because it is wrong but if there are some others who are willing to do wrong pvc are willing to reap any benefits that be derived from their wrone doing vo have been told for years that the salvation of this people de upon our supporting home industries dus tries but have we done this many home industries have been started and by u great deal of expense and labor some of them have proved successful cess ful but many have proved unsuccessful cess ful my advice to the young men is to try to engage in something that is productive that will create labor our elders go forth in the world to proclaim these principles their joy is great when aliey are enabled to convert a few souls it is generally those who have not much of this worlds goods who are converted but they are generally industrious dust rious they come here and are often discouraged because of the lack of employment and the lack of interest in their welfare by the saints who are here there should be no lack of employment among this people I 1 cannot promise alio young men that they will become rich by demoting deyo ting their time and means to the support of home industries but I 1 can promise them that aliey will receive the blessings blessin cs of the lord we should be well enough acquainted with the history of mankind that in order to become great we should be honest and industrious when we make an engagement we should always try to fulfill it to the very letter by taking a course of aliis kind we inspire confidence in alio employ us I 1 would urge upon alie young people to live in peace and harmony with each other if some one wrongs you and you have an op do them a good turn those aho vho live the lives ot latter day saints will not harbor feelings against auy one the speaker concluded his remarks by urging the arong people to live up to the requirements of the gospel in every detail the observance of the word of wisdom was made especial mention of the general and stake officers of the association were sustained by the congregation gre gation PRESIDENT georoge H BRIMHALL occupied the lew remaining by urging each one of the members of alie association to be alive in his in the go spell it is a time of activity and we should so live that we can look back upon the time when we stood under the tree of life with the spring of activity at our feet and say that we drank deeply of this water the choir sang an anthem benediction was pronounced by J R boshard AFTERNOON SERVICES ELDER SAMUEL addressed the congregation briefly the bible quotation train up a child in the wey it should go and when it ia old it will not depart from it was quoted this implies upon parents a great responsibility setting an example is not sufficient it is not sufficient that a should all alie child to eo to sunday school or to the micnal improvement association but the parent should see that the child does go PRESIDENT DAVID JOHN took pleasure in making a few we are of the lord to assemble to gathor to him we have met tor alie purpose of partaking of the bread and water in remembrance of our sav in my travels I 1 have met many who were surprised to learn that the latter day saints believed in the savior they dont seek to understand the principles believed in by the latter dav saints we have come into this western country just as the children of israel were compel e 1 to flee out of the land of egypt was no political object in alie deliverance of the children of iseral it was simply that they might god according to the dictates of their own consciences it was conr purpose when we came liere to worship god and not to found a now government it has been claimed that we have committed treason towards the government this can never be proved because the claim is not true we cs me this land and we have made this country aliat it is and we will yet have proper credit amone mankind for v hat we have done I 1 woud alvise the young men to real and study books but let them le member to call upon god th young men were advised to attend to their political auti f chev should go to the en tuesday and cast their ballots I 1 er M II 11 hardy nf to the mutual urk some persons have thought that ann M I 1 A work was a failure it is pleading to oo koyer this and to hear the made and see what has been done the young men f utah understand the principles of liberty the young men are becoming students class work and lecture work are being started ai soon as in rs and lecturers can be secured PRESIDENT A 0 ras afforded pleasure to bear his testimony to the good things that biad been said to dav by the various speakers we read alio history of former dispensations and the dealings of god with men but what wo want to learn today to day is how to arvo god during our days we have had some practical sermons today to day and I 1 heartily endorse all that has been said looking oa this congregation reminds me of the old adage of making a mountain out of a mole hill it to me that the lord is making a mountain out of a molehill when the sunday schools were started in provo there WAS an average attendance of about sixty I 1 presume there are now over a thousand students enrolled in shortly after these mutual improvement associations were organized and they have almost grown into a mountain the fruits of these improvement associations are apparent and BO are the fruits of the sunday schools and the primary associations it affords me great pleasure to aee this and such speeches as we have had today from the young men are cheering I 1 know that god has planted the feet of an honest people in the midst of these mountains I 1 would say to the young people that the prophet joseph saw that this church could not be established in the states of babalion Bab alyon lie was shown by the lord these western wilds he organized a company of fifty and was making preparations to cross the steril country but was followed by the enemy arrested taken back and martyred marty red president young was left to lead this people and we followed him to this land where we have been abundantly blessed twenty two ears ago in the winter time we used to cut ur meetings short because the sisters were but thinly clad and might catch cold but today to day we have aery comfort of life some of the sisters even having hats that look like flower gardens president G H brimhall spoke briefly urging the young people to attend the B Y academy he bore hia testimony of the great amount of benefits he had secured by attending this institution the choir ang an anthem benediction was pronounced by elder J W cluff in the evening an sc ellent and instructive tive lecture on siena of the times was delivered by elder K G maesar |
