Show THE orchestral CONCERT an event that proved a grand artistic success notwithstanding the counter attractions on saturday evening the opera house orchestra drear out an j u d cm e for t leir was highly delighted with the various selections the pro gramme was made up of a hiah class of music and if we are to judge by the warm applause showered upon the performers the entertainment was amaat decided success th e audij ence was made up of our leading citizens and lovers of the divine art who we are pleased to note aro enthusiastic in their praise of the efforts of our local musicians in laboring to make music what H should be our young artists both vocal and making rapid headway and those who attended saturday evenings performance were agreeably surprised the first piece was a galop by the opera house band which was rendered with vim and tact opening the concert with life and good feeling which prevailed all through the entertainment alia piece received loud applause then followed the operatic chorus oh hall us ye free directed by prof J E daniels accompanied by the orchestra this chorus was rendered in splendid time and precision and with that force that the piece requires it received hearty applause next came miss jennie peck with a pretty song rendered in her usual pleasing manner mr harry boshard gave us the beautiful song by balfe then remember me in excellent voice and expression although a little gentleman showed a decided improvement over his other to hear hia fine tenor voice more frequently in the future one of the features of the evening was the harp and piccolo duett by ana L jones and henry ayans of pleasant valley it was heartily enjoyed and received a rapturous encore drift my bark a beautiful classic duett was sweetly rendered by mra dodd and mrs men ill these ladies have sweet voices that blend nicely together and they know how to use them in delighting an audience J E boagard has never before ap pared to such good advantage aa he did on saturday evening the fine song it was A dream was well i suited 10 his full baritone voice his expression and manner of using hia voice has greatly improved since we last heard him among the most artistic pieces of work i during the evening was the piano solo by Mit sDora davis tho talented pianist her rendition of lietza transcription of rigoletto Ei goletto was a fine piece of execution her in the heavy octave passages were bordering on the marvelous whilo the beautiful meloda clearly rang aad her and broken executed while the chromatic passages both double and single were given with that precision accuracy and rapidity that would do credit to experienced performers the entire piece wah all its difficult passages was rendered with masterly execution and an encore was demanded miss our local favorite sang a pretty waltz song alone at last in a very happy g manner the wonderful advancement this lady is makina was quite noticeable young on saturday evening her voice is becoming very flexible her high tones more clear and cheis gaining confidence in herself which the audience cannot help bu notice whenever she appears on the stage at the close of her aang she was erected with a adorm of applause in return for which she gave dillards millards Mil lards wait isk in fine style mrs giles also shared the honors of the evening her rendition of tho for me was full of expression sweetly and delicately sang an encore birds was demanded and she ga caveye veYe merry the orchestral selections were of course among the min features each calling forth hearty applause which was well merited the medley overture and waltz were very nicely rendered but the best work done was in the grand selection from Il trovatore where eh e h of the solo instruments had a chance t shine the flate cornet and violin in turn doing well the orchestra made a decided hit at its first concert and we are certain that we echo the sentiment of the public in general when we assert that the good work they are doing should be encouraged we hope to see the boya keep up their rehearsals and appear before the public often such high class performances as that given on saturday is indeed a to our growing prosperous city |
