The placing of contracts for basic iron by stool works, the buying of low-grade foundry and forge iron by pipo works, and the awakening of interest in contracts for pig iron running over the second, third and fourth quartors of next year, were tho most prominent features in the iron trade last week. Steel companies in eastern Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania havo obtained 35,000 tons of fa-sic fa-sic for first and second quarter of 1010 shipments at .-SlSJo delivered, making the total of such contracts in tho last two wMtks 55,000 tons. Tn all, contracts for pig iron in the iron district last -week aggregated 75.000 tons. In finished steel products a diminished dimin-ished volume of. orders has been evident evi-dent in sheets nnd' tin plate and wire products, but specifications on previous previ-ous contracts have been heavy. Railroads Rail-roads have ordered 36,000 tons more rails. Equipment orders have been relatively rel-atively light, aggregating 2500 caTS and 45 locomotives. About 2000 cars and locomotives are still under negotiations. nego-tiations. Contracts ' for fabricated structural slcel have aggregated 25,000 tons. "Inquiries "In-quiries are now out for 15,000 tons for railway bridges. The municipal building at New York will require from 20,000 to 25,000 tous of steel shapes.
