A new typo of pavement foundation is being used In Hartford, Conn., on a few streets whoro heavy nine-Inch rails of the Boston grooved typo uro hclnk' nut down for street railway.'.. On tho rolled surfaco or tho earth a six-Inch bod of concrete Is then epread for a width of nbout six Inches moio than the distance across both cross ties. Tho concrete Is then carried up along the cdBoo of this exenvntton, making a lontr shullpw trench which la then filled with broken atone. At tho centro of this trench a half-round tile drain 13 laid for carrying- off the water. Treated cross ties arc carefully tamped In place In tho brokta rocl which la carried up within I thr5o Inches of tho flnlahod pavement surface. ,uAftef being thoroughly consolidated at : this elevation It is covered with three I nehes of concrete the lower one and a ! Jrches, h2.ins mnd0 w,th Poitland i cement and tho upper one and a half inches with usphaltlc cement. Tho final surface Is .a two and a half-Inch asphalt layer.
