the assured continuance of your wise just and patriotic administration upon the conclusion of jus remarks introduced charles D D jacobs of kentucky who read the following jetter of notification washington june 26 the honorable grover cleveland of keiu york sin tho delegates to the national democratic convention representing every state and territory of our union having as semb lodin the city of st on june ath ehst for the purpose of nominating candidates for the offices of president and vice of the united states it has become the honorable and pleas mg duty of this committee to formally announce to you that without pallet you were by acclamation chosen as the stand ard bearer 0 the democratic party for the chief of the country at the election to be held in november next great as is such a distinction under any circumstances it is most and profound when it is remembered you have been selected your own successor to an office the duties of which always onerous have been rendered of an extraordinarily tra ordinarily sensitive and delicate nature because of the change of the political party and methods after twenty four years of uninterrupted domination the exaltation is if pos sible added to by the declaration 0 principles made to the national members of congress of the united states relative to the reduction and diminution of the ex pences of government throws down a direct and defiant challenge for the exacting scrutiny of the administration of the executive power which four years ago was committed to its trust by the election of grover of the united states and for the most searching inquiry concerning its fidelity and devotion to the pledges which then invited the suffer ages oi the people an engrossed copy oi that platform adopted without a dis benting voice is herewith tendered to carrying sir to you the responsible trust which has been confided to them this committee beg individually and collectively to express the great pleasure which they felt at the results attending the national convention of the democratic party and to offer you their best wishes for official and personal success and happiness we have the honor sir to be your servants signed by all the members of the committee mr thos S secretary of the committee then presenta presen tr mr cleveland with a handsomely engraved copy of the platform adopted at the national democratic convention the president in reply said 1 I cannot but bo profoundly impressed when I 1 see about me the messengers of the national democracy bearing its summons to do duty for the political party to which I 1 owe allegiance and which both honors and commands me it places in my hand its proud standard and bids me bear it high at the front in the battle which it wages bravely because conscious of the tigh and confidently because its trust is in the people and soberly because it comprehends the obligations which success imposes the message which you bring awakens within me the liveliest sense of personal gratitude and satisfaction and the honor which you tender me is in its great that there might wel be no room jor any otylior sentiment and yet I 1 cannot rid myself of grave and serious thoughts when J remember that party supremacy is not alone involved in the conflict which presses upon us but that we are engaged in a struggle to secure the cherished institutions and the welfare of a nation of freeman familiarity with the great office which athold has not added to ray apprehension of its sacred character and tho consecration demanded of him who assumes its immense responsibilities it is tho repository of wa peoples will and i t v t is ifs vision should lo 10 fihs ihs protection and welfare of tho humblest citizen and with a buik ear it should catch from the remotest comer of the land tho plea odthe people for justice and right for the sake of the people he wha holds this office of theirs should resist every encroachment upon its legitimate functions and for the sake of the integrity and usefulness of alie of the offida it should be kept near to the people and bo administered in full sympathy with then wants and needs this occasion reminds me most vividly of when four years ago I 1 received a message from my party similar to that which you now deliver with all that has passed since that day I 1 can truly say that the feeling of awe with which I 1 heard the summons then is intensified tenfold when repeated now four years ago I 1 knew our chief executive office if not carefully guarded might drift little belittle away from the people to whom it belongs and become the perversion of all it ought to be but 1 know how much its moorings bad already leon loosened 1 I knew four years ago bow well devised were the principles of democracy for the successful operation of tho government by the people and for the people but I 1 did not know how absolutely necessary their application then was restoration to the people of their safety and prosperity 1 knew then that abuses and gances had crept into the management of public affairs but I 1 did not forms nor the tenacity of their grasp I 1 knew then something of the bitterness of partisan obstructions but I 1 did not know how bitter how reckless and how shameless it could bo I 1 knew too that the american people were patriotic and just but I 1 dd not know how grandly they loved their country nor how noble and generous they were I 1 shall not dwell upon the acts and policy 0 the administration now drawing to a close its record is open to ever citizen of the land and yet I 1 will not be denied the privilege ot asserting at this time that in the exercise of the functions of the high trust confided to me I 1 have yielded obedience only to the constitution and thesolean the solemn obligation of my oath of office I 1 have dono those things which in the light of the understanding god has given me seemed most conductive to the welfare of my countrymen and the promotion of good government I 1 would not if I 1 could cpr myself nor for you avoid a single consequence of a fair interpretation of my course it but remains for me to say to you and through you to the democracy of the nation that I 1 accept the nomination with which they honored me but that I 1 will in due signify such acceptance in the usual formal manner the remarks were made in an earnest and emphatic manner and frequently interrupted by applause this closed the speech making and all present proceeded to the state dining room and partook of light refresh laments afterwards the committee became the guests of tho columbia Ciu band were driven about the city the committee will leave for columbia wednesday and notify thurman thursday |
