Show THE SCHOOLS OUTING tho happy time spent at Neil sens park saturday editor or the ENQUIRER on saturday morning last as announced in the last issue of the en the west school headed by the provo silver band formed a procession and proceeded up confer street to main thence to the east schoolhouse where while the band discoursed sweet strains the waiting throng of little ones were being comfortably seated in vehicles the procession thus augmented made its way to the central schoolhouse when it was joined by the other division at the word all ready the long line of conveyances moved on to its objective point Neil sens pleasure park some three and a half miles northwest of provo near the line of the C and the D R G railroads here is found the grateful shade of a thousand verdant trees so arranged that one can drive for miles protected from the rays of old sol the air is made balmy by the fragrance of of flowers the eyes feast upon alie western landscape where bordered by green meadows on the one side and gray bills on the other utah lake lies spread out like a silver sheen in the eastern horizon rise thi snowcap snow cap ped summits of tin wasatch the north is hemmed in by forests of poplar willow and while on the south are low covered sand hills with here and there a lonely scrub cedar silent reminders of the desert sterility that once held sway over a region now blooming with leauby and laden with bounty after the first few moments of gladsome gush was over both young and old alighted the former making a general rush for the mammoth twelve couple swing and the latter seeking the luxury a rustic seat in the commodious papillion pavillion pa then came a test of school discipline hundreds of young folks each clamoring for his right to a seat in the air car the utmost capacity of which is thirty six little folks or twenty four large ones but the oil of order was poured over the troubled waters of confusion as the superintendent reads from a pro gramme first swing chart class the crowd moved back the tiny ones step forward are lifted in and take ride number one the first readers are then called and swung and so on to the fifth then the parents the visitors and finally captain wallis with his silver band associates socia tes who rode and to the delight of all except those pushing the swing haritis Hark the school bell it calls but not to toilsome tasks nor mental feasts it has forgotten its oft repeated phrases school time school time and with echoing accent peals forth dinner dinner dinner then was there rushing to and fro and mouths that half an hour ago were parched with animations heat watered at thoughts of viands sweet the band and distinguished visitors repaired to the pavilion where the lady teachers had spread a table for forty persons with picnic appetites 1 wha partook of plenty with seeming pleasure lunch over which took well time enough for a hungry man and a growing school boy to eat consecutively the floor was cleared and the light fantastic tob tripped to the inspiring charms of giles brothers violins one of alie grandest features of the days proceeding was the Cale exercises of the combined schools to the muaia of the silver band this es arcise was carried through with a precision of execution and a uniformity and grace of movement that elicited the ex pressed admiration of all the pro gramme was carried out the pleasure work done and everybody launched upon the aea of go as you please one not acquainted with our system of school training and the true dignity of our boys and girls seeing them so full of life and liberty would suppose that if once the lines of official restraint slackened the youngsters as they are popularly called would run rampant over the barriers of propriety but not io each one displayed characteristics te of self government that unmistakably indicated that they lovid order respected authority and appreciated the beautiful v as the flower garden the lawn the strawberry patch and the little humming birds nest all unguarded and yet not a foot print was made within alie border the one nor a touch of barm boon the other during the entire daiy diy in their morals and manners the school children displayed the qualities of miniature men ami women As the sun neared alie western horizon and cast its rays beneath the leafy arch ways of the circular promenade the bell rang again and the call ready foe home was made the band played and led the way and homeward bended wended the many who biad anticipated found and spent a day of pleasure ONE OF THE |
