Show bufi celebration the citizens Mee tius held last night THE READ BY thea COMMITTEE A little wrangle over the real object of the meeting last night at twenty minutes to 9 a large turnout turn out of citizens met in the courthouse Cour thoune to hear the report of the committee on arrangements tor a proper celebration of the fourth the silver band was in attendance having paraded main street in behalf of the gand also played one or selections outside the courthouse Gour before the meeting was duly opened all the sub commit tees were represented and every beai b er of the general committee was on liand the meeting was called to order by chairman geo sutherland secretary V L halliday arose and read the report of diio general commit tee the report states eliat the signal for the procession to form will be fired at am on seventh street in front of courthouse beaded by tho silver band the states and territories will be represented by youna ladies the original states in a chariot drawn by six gray horses and the states and territories as abc the present time on horseback the officers of the day mayor city council chamber of commerce professions and trades will rm part of the procession the martial and harmonica bands will occupy prom in the affair the exercises in the bowery vill be called to order by Y H dusenberry president of the day the chaplain is rev campbell orator geo sutherland reader of the declaration of independence A 0 smoot jr the toasts will be respond ed to by A S R thurman david evans W N dusenberry F H jimmona and W G A smoot jr during which bongs music and salutes will be given the benediction will be pronounced by V L halliday the pro gramme will be published in full in the ENQUIRER as soon as it is finally agreed upon mr W 0 A smoot jr moved that a committee on antiques and horri bles be appointed and that B bachman jr be appointed chairman of that committee the question being out of order the motion was withdrawn and a motion to accept the report made by A G sutherland ivsich was seconded mr A 0 smoot jr moved to amend the motion providing by for a proper representation resen tation of the territories by young ladies on horseback the amendment was seconded and carried mr W C A smoot jr renewed his antique and horrible motion and of berred it as an amendment to the original motion mr david evana desired information as to the meaning of antiques and horrors and the chair being unable to enlighten the gentleman seeking information mr W C A smoot was requested to ventilate the question which he did to the satisfaction of all the following gentlemen were then elected as the horri bles W C A smoot jr B bachman jr and geo dusenberry mr A G sutherland thought that there should be a committee appointed to look after a proper representation of the trades inasmuch as it had been included in the pro gramme mr W H brown moved that the pro gramme be adopted aa read with the understanding that should any alterations in it bo deemed necessary the marshal of tho day be empowered to change it mr A G sutherland opposed the motion it gave tho marshal more work than was and not only that it would interfere with the pro gramme air brown still insisted on his motion as there were several other important subjects to be considered by the meeting and by disposing of this question i would facilitate matters mr A 0 smoot jr was heir heartily tily in favor of the amendment with the understanding that the committee on arrangements place in important position in the procession the different representation a of trades enterprises etc the amendment as offered by mr brown was then put and carried as was aleo the motion to adopt the report hon W N dusenberry then made a verbal report from the committee on grounds he stated that after duly con question they thought the best thing that could be done would bo to erect a bowery on the west half of the courthouse block in conjunction with the baud stand that ia to bs erected by the city council for the silver band kotlier places biad been considered in to celebrate but alter due consideration it was thought eliat the west half of the square was the best and lie would ask the hearty coop co op aeration of alie meeting in deciding upon that location A motion wa wai i made to accept alie motion when mr david evans offered an amendment that tho committee continue onti nue their labors in case of any change bing found necessary the motion amended was accepted mr A G sutherland Sut heiland in reporting on decoration thought it would be well for a joint committee meeting on decoration building and grounds to be held in order to ascertain what height alie baw ery is to be constructed with other matters necessary to bo before alie committee on decoration could attend to their air A 0 smoot thon ht these subcommittee reports were unnecessary as of time ho matters be left to the general committee and made a motion eliat alie silver band favor the meeting with sueae mr W A smoot jr then reported from the committee on mr david evana reported progress of alie committee on fit reworks and seconded lie motion of A 0 smoot that the silver band favor tho meeting with music the chairman thought a motion to adjourn would be in order and then if the people wished the meeting could bo turned into the hands of alio silver band mr AO smoot jr still insisted that the meeting had not been called to hear tho weary details of subcommittees it was understood that they were to report to the general committee who in turn was to report at thi meeting this called the chairman on the corn cittee on finance air W C A smoot jr to hiis feet ho entertained most decidedly contrary views to the previous speaker on the subject hon warren JS dosenberry then arose to explain and concluded by offering a motion to the effect that the meeting adjourn till a week before the fourth when a mass meeting of the citizens be called to hear a detailed report from the general committee the motion mot with no second nd died then ensued a general as to whether the meeting should hear reports of committees subcommittees sub or not during which mr A G sutherland that the equilibrium of the bo restored by bonio soothing band several got up to and they were ruled out of order finally mr goodwin was recognized by the chair as mr yoon and alie gentleman explained to the meeting what he understood to bo the rig htway and concluded by buering ou ering a motion that tho report of alie commit wi on finance be accepted this met with second ad t died mr V L halliday then offered some e batad hiat the meet ing had been called to hear tha report of the general committee that committee having mado ita report and the report having been accepted the object of the meeting had been accomplished and a motion to adjourn donld bo in order A motion was thereupon made seconded and carried and the meeting adjourned till 8 thursday night at the same silver band then played a waltz after which the people dispersed |
