Show ALLEGED MURDER A man arrested for a crime coni seventeen years aso yesterday morning a man in handcuff s john D keller passed through to salt lake city from the north in charge of deputy marshal holland he is accused of having killed a man named wade badgely at thoele tooele county utah may 1 1871 ho was arrested at the lime and placed under bonds which ho jumped he has since resided in montana under the name of jno C obrien and has owned several valuable mines some of winch he sold for a song and others of which he still holds he was arrested at woodville montana on the afternoon of june ath by sheriff thomas ho had been recognized by john paxton and his son afrank who were at the time of the lolling justice of tho peace and constable at altherman therman as keller who had killed wade badgely seventeen years ago they informed the authorities in utah an indictment and requisition followed and U S marshal dyer and deputy holland at once went north upon their arrival keller was turned ver over o to them and was taken down to the penitentiary yesterday A representative of the standard obtained a brief interview with him on the cars and he freely talked of his past life and the present charge against him the following is in substance his story my namo is john D keller and not obrien as has been erroneously stated I 1 go by the name of keller in montana and have a daughter there who goes by the eama name early in the Ws I 1 came to utah from california having served under gen P E connor as a soldier I 1 was honorably discharged at fort douglas in july 1866 wade baago ly was also a soldier but deserted it is said with some funds belonging to the army I 1 met him several times at stockton where 1 I was engaged in mining though I 1 knew of hs crookedness I 1 did not give him away but when I 1 saw him paying his attentions tent ions to young woman I 1 warned her not to intimacy with him whatever instead of heeding my warning she told badgely about it he came to the door of my cabin and fired fair shots at me I 1 would certainly have been killed had it not been thai my wife pulled me back and slammed tha door shut badgely went off muttering that he would lay for me I 1 did not go down town that day for fear of trouble the following day however I 1 decided to go down and get a drink my wife fearing some trouble slipped a six shooter into my pocket X had been in this saloon but a few moments when badgely entered with sleeves rolled up ho jumped on me got me down and beat my face to a jelly he then went behind the bar got a gun and was reaching it across the bar to shoot me while I 1 was lying on the floor by the time I 1 had got my own pistol out and fired at him the bullet entering his mouth and coming out at the back of the neck severing the bad a trial before a justice of the peace who through personal enmity refused to discharge me on the plea of self de fence I 1 was subsequently arraigned at salt lake and placed onder 2000 bonds thomas pitch ESC agreed to defend me for a half interest in my mine under his advice 1 I lumped the bonds letting the other half of the mine go for their payment he intimating ti that I 1 would not be wanted I 1 then went north adopting during a drunken frolio the name of a companion whose namo was obrien there chave taught school once worked some at carpentering and owned some good mining property I 1 feel that I 1 will be justinea jus tined for what I 1 did whether kellers story will hold water will be developed at the rial aden standard |
