Show BUSINESS AND TRADE. The pleasant woathor of the week "has boon vory oncouragiug in building operations, and accordingly tho building build-ing work has boon pushed with a vigor and to an oxtent never before scon horc nt this time of tho year. On Tuesday Tues-day activo work was begun on tho new Mining Exchange structure on Cactus street, loading from Exchango Place to Fourth South. Tho work is bciug pushed also on the Commercial Club's now building, and on the numerous business bus-iness blocks in procc-ss of construction, as well as on private residences in all parts of town. . Tho record of building permits for the two months of the present year showed an incrcaso for Januar3', 1909, of .$345,131 above those of January of last year, and for Febru.-uy, $11,240 ahead. For two months, therefore, wo havo a record of upwards of $355,000 increase compared with last year. The building permits for March also start off in record-breaking style, and donbt-loss donbt-loss the permits for the presout month will far exceed thoso of any previous March iu the histoiy of Salt Lake. The city administration is keeping up well with tho march of improvements, improve-ments, also. Five big items of public improvement were ordered during tho week, nffecting twenty thousand peoplo, peo-plo, and these will soon be under active ac-tive progress. These improvements call for an oxpeuditure of close upon $300,-000, $300,-000, of which the city's part will be upwards of $50,000. Tho improvements consist, of sidewalk extension No. 132, in tho southwest part of the cit3 and sidowalk extension No. 136, in tho southeast part of the cit3 There aro al6o three paving extensions No. 51, from First avanuo to Virginia street; No. 5-1, West Tomplo, between Fifth and Seventh South; and No. 55, First West, between South Temple and Third South. The work on the North Temple Tem-ple conduit will bo pushed as rapidly as is possible, and also the work on sower extension 182, in the southwestern southwest-ern portion of tho cit-. Another important work of a semi-public semi-public character and wholly public in its use, is the proposed auto speadway between this city and Saltair. The officers of-ficers and directors of the city's Automobile Auto-mobile club aro at the back of this enterprise, and propose to organize a company with a capital stock of $100,-000 $100,-000 to put it through. The business of the city for the week has been fair; according to the' bank clearance report it has been booming. The increase in tho bank clearances during the week compared with tho clearances of the corresponding week in 1908 show a gain of Go per cent. Tho influx of population gives a stimulus stimu-lus to trade and causes stocks of all kinds, from tho market food products to the staple merchant stocks, to be in larger quantity and greater varietj than over before. The real estate market continues its good showing, both as to strongth and activit3-. The sales arc reported good at all times, and the aggregate salos always amount to a considerable sum. , The mines of the Stato are contributing contribut-ing richly to the difforent channels of commerce, indust-, aud trade, and the prospects for a year much abovo that of last indicate that the mining depression de-pression is practically over. The mining min-ing yield is all that could be expected under the present state of the copper and silver markets, aud the ore reduction re-duction facilities arc moro and more on a satisfactory basis than ever before. Work on the new joint depots in this city is being pushed in good style, and it is tho iniention of the Oregon Short Lino Company to havo its depot finished fin-ished prior to tho Grand Army encampment. en-campment. This will add a special feature fea-ture of interest to tho city, and will bo welcomed by all the inhabitants here. The Rio Grande Western depot is not so well advanced, and probably will not be finished until well along towards the close of the 3-car. The Western Pacific wijl occupy this depot jointly -with tho Rio Grande Western on the construction of tho Western Pacific Pa-cific through to San Francisco, which has been promised by next September but which if finished and traius run ning regularly by the end of the yea-will yea-will bo good enough, The snows in tho hills aro verv heavy nnd deep. The precipitation of the winter win-ter has been much above tho average for many years. Tho accumulated ox-cess ox-cess of precipitation since .Tam,,.,. w amounts to 1.78 iucheB, as compared with tho average for thirty-five years The result is a rise of tho lake reaching reach-ing out towards tho old lovol of twenty years ago and moro. and that is liable to make some trouble for the now track of tho Western Pacific. But that track-can track-can easily be raised and kept out of the water. The lake is now higher than at any time for many years at this season, and will undoubtedly bo higher iJasf S'Ummer than for many yea" The abundant snows also giV9 a5 surauce of an ample water supplv for every purpose during tho ensuing" sca. son.
