Show denouncing CLEVELAND the resolutions adopted by the few republicans public ans that met in this city wednesday as a county convention declare something that history unmistakably refutes we refer to the plank alluding to the service of president cleveland as devoid of results for good and denouncing noun cing alie present administration as being a delusion aul a snare it is a varv easy matter to frame words that fall upon the car in musical cadence but when it comes to facts the matter is a little more difficult As to Clev elands administration resulting in no good this is a very broad assertion without a vestige of backing the condition of the government ates the statement even though we have no stupendous deeda of greatness from mr Clev elands three years of administration we have the fact demonstrated that it has been a good clean honest administration is more powerful than all the lobby cliques and intrigues which can be devised it is apparent that the republican party have utterly failed to conjure up a name or an issue which gives any hope of overcoming the great popular cense of approval and universal endorsement of president administration and the actions of bis excellent cabinet mr cleveland as the representative of the people has spoken for the people he has formulated their declaration of principles ho has said for them that the burden of taxation must ba lifted he has given ample reason the burden is stifling industry instead of protecting it it is driving hope from the life of the toiler it is giving over to alie unworthy bands of the monopolist all the good things of the earth it is sending prices 80 high that necessaries become luxuries and luxuries impossible all of this mr cleveland hs denounced and yet our brilliant provo republicans denounce the democratic party for its warfare upon protection and charses that party with an unholy alliance with the enemies of the nations advancement at home and abroad american intelligence knows better than this it was written merely for effect and is to be used inthe national campaign as a bait for the support of monopoly the pool and the trust will be needed by the republicans this year and if they are stronger than the robbed and indignant people then blaine or some other friend of will be president the people however havo begun to realize their own strength and the justice of self de bense whatever else may ba said it is proven that sir cleveland ia not a partisan that be is not an ambitious place seeker that he is not a schemer for personal advancement whatever he hag done or may do right or wrong has not been and will not be for self glory or in deference to popular clamor never since the early days of the republic has there been a president who has called to his aid the leading statesmen clamoring for a real public reform but holding different opinions and proceeded to so enlighten thorn as to the public needs as to harmonize their ideas such a course is a great departure from the usual plan where selfish ambition leads As such it will find in tho future criticism and misrepresentation for partisan purposes the republican talk about the par tys intense love for the soldier ia all clap trap and not worth the wind it takes to utter it the record of the present administration on the business is not of a nature to hurt the democratic party or help the republicans in the coming campaign the republicans public ans are far more eager and loud in their desire to love protect and honor the defenders of the country now than they were when in a position to do something tho soldiers themselves those who did real honest service in the field are not so weak mentally ag not to see the difference between republican bombast and the democratic action mr cleveland has shown by his honest vetoing of pension bills that a reform has been needed in tha matter of wholesale pensioning in this particular he has been fearless As guardian of the peoples money he has dared to sit down on republican jobbery and expose it to the daylight daylis ht it would not be consistent therefore to imagine the republicans would let such an opportunity for campaign capital slip by by posing before tho soldier population as their champion and denouncing president cleveland for vetoing bills 0 r i them pensions they hope to get their vote abo fact of the matter is the entire pension business should be reformed we would like to aeo the present laws repealed and new ones substituted which would ba of real benefit to the old soldiers who suffer alie veterans who were disabled and incapacitated from earning their own living should be liberally supported but those who are able to work and earn own living without government aid although iliev were injured in ha war should be cut off there are thousands of able bodied citizens today drawing pensions alio ar not disqualified in the least from earn ing their own liv ings and who have handsome fortunes and incomes of their own any way while those who were crippled and are now destitute and unable to work must get along with a mere pit tarco tho democrats of the country have reason to rejoice the public approval has been bestowed upon mr Clev elands honest fearless and yet conservative methods the good government i he has given the people is tho govern ment the people wants they will go to the polls and say so by their ballots blaine if nominated will simply be defeated there is not a shadow of reason to look for a different outcome the same forces which opposed him augmented at every point are opposing him still hia friends may run him and work for him and vote and repeat for him but after all they will get the nothing for which they clamor |
