Show THE HIGH LICENSE BILL PASSED abo numerously j to the city council praying that the prohibition ordinance lie not annulled and the fact no petition for high license cent in to that body council last night a change in the policy of the city eo far ag tho liquor question is concerned and passed an ordinance licensing me sale of intoxicants A summary of this ordinance we have already given but one or two of the several amendments to the bill last night make euch a chiango in the purport of the measure that we deem it necessary to refer to them one of these is in section 2 requiring tho sureties to the bond of the license applicant to be men neither of whom is engaged in the ans icess of selling liquor the next important amendment occurs in section s 10 where tho words or on any legal holidays arc stricken out and the words inserted or upon any day on which alie mayor by proclamation cla mation forbid the giving belling or otherwise deposing of eaid liquors this amendment was made the bill forbid under pain of penalty the belling of intoxicating liquors oa any legal holiday in this same section the time of opening and closing saloons is changed the bill formerly made it imperative e open not earlier than C a in and close not later than 10 p in now saloons can be kept open till 11 at and can be opened at 5 in the morning the next section 11 contains one of the most if not alio most important change in tho bill it ia in to allowing billiard and pool tables etc in any room where liquore are cold or in any adjoining room connected therewith by an avenue of direct communication this part quoted is all stricken out so eliat now liquor can be sold iu one room and billiards and pool played in any room adjoining by an of direct communication or not this was alio main feature objected to by tho billiard hall keepers who antici asted taking out a license they arc now satisfied fied with one or two other minor amendments of no material value the bill remains as it was alie drug store question for the consideration of which alie bill v as re committed to the judiciary committee for amendment has not been touched prove is now under 1 high license regime and we can afford to await the beneficial results that havo been promised us will flow from the cliance cl iange |
