the admission of utah as a state provides that the qualifications necessary to the constitutional convention directed to be held by the bill shall be the same as are now required in the election of members of the territorial legislature the utah commission is granted power to apportion the state into one hundred election districts and on the day of the regular annual election in august 1888 delegates shall be chosen for the constitutional tut ional convention to meet at salt lake city on the second tuesday of december 1888 if after organization the delegates shall adopt the constitution of the united states they shall have a right to frame a state constitution which shall contain among other things an irrevocable ordinance providing that perfect toleration of religious sentiments shall be secured and that no inhabitant of the state shall ever be secured and that no inhabitant of the state shall over be molested in person or property on account of his mode of religious worship if the constitution formed by this convention shall bo ratified by the people of the territory the president is required to issue a proclamation for admitting the state into the union the bill was referred to the committee on territories the secretary of the treasury sent to the house this morning a letter of the attorney general relative to the necessity for an appropriation for repairs and enlargement of tho utah penitentiary garland encloses the report made by the grand jury of utah and letters from marshal dyer chief justice zane hoim united states attorney peters showing the necessity for the enlargement and improvement of the penitentiary the sum of is asked for the work A terrible accident SAVANNAH GA march 17 an accident to a florida vestibule train is reported to have occurred at blackshear georgia on the atlantic an i gulf road 85 miles from savannah and 10 miles from way cross the first section of the fast mail train from new york for jacksonville went through a trestle a point 75 miles south of savannah this morning the entire train except the engine is demolished moli shed nineteen people are reported to have been killed and between thirty and forty inifred ten of whom are expected to die the private car of president wilbur of the lehigh valley road with mr wilbur and george gould and wife and oth erb in it was one of the train president wilbur is reported as seriously injured george gould is unhurt and mrs gould slightly injured relief trains have gone out with physicians the accident was caused by a broken rail under the baggage car the baggage car got ott the track about a quarter of a mile before it reached the bridge of hurricane biver tho baggage car mounted the track but the train pa ed safely over the bridge immediately on the other side of the bridge there is a trestle several hundred feut in length when the baggage car struck the trestle gave way and the entire train with the exception of the engine dropped through and with the exception of one car was completely wrecked the train consisted of a combination car one coach two pullman sleepers and the private car of the lehigh valley the second engine ran to black shear a mile distant for assistance soon all tho physicians in the place were present besides many who were ready to render assistance in getting on the dead and rescuing the wounded superintendent in fleming of the railroad as soon as he heard of the accident left savannah for the scene of the accident with physicians and nurses all afternoon and evening he had a full force of hands clearing away the wreck about four hundred feet of trestle was carried up to midnight the only communication with the acene of the wreck has been through the railroad officials the NEW YORK march 16 the list of victims of the recent snowstorm so far reported amounts to thirty persons tho weather is cloudy andward and warm this morning the snow is iash disappearing the main thoroughfares are all cleared the 16 A snow plow unshed by four engines jumped the track near sharon this i afternoon and killed the conductor engineer brakeman and fireman four seriously injured march 16 the american line steamship mcgee was found in a snow drift at ansonia this morning frozen to death BALTIMORE march 17 definite news of the destruction of vessels and yand the loss of life on the tower chesapeake is beginning to come in in Anna messex eiver an unknown schooner was found with a crew of six men frozen stiff in muddy creek a number of oyster dredgers are known to have perished the schooner eastern light lost four of her crew the schooner joseph alien also lost four it is impossible as yet to estimate the full damage of the storm upon the chesapeake but from data at hand between and vessels were either cast ashore or sunk from thirty to forty were wrecked and probably thirty people drowned most off the vessels were oyster schooners ners the inundations of the lowlands of maryland delaware and i caused a great loss on the eastern shore the people were obliged to live in the attics and in one region vessels were cabied feet inland among alie strivers hers denver march 17 the strike on the santa fe has not changed since yesterday the company has been unable to get out any trains for two days and has had none in since yesterday noon the men when called for duty reported they were information to that effect ELPASO texas march 17 owing to the strike on the santa fe road no through trains on that road left here since thursday morning till 9 this evening when a train was started east trains arte run as usual the strike interferes with handling freight to and from mexico but mexican engineers are being used in place of santa fo engineers KANSAS CITY march 17 at ten this morning the fort gulf trains were all moving promptly and with regularity the situation on the santafe is unchanged there is no being done in the yards chairman carroll speaking in regard to the tha feeling expressed rumors were rife again this morning that the gulf road would bo tied up at 4 but the indications are that there will be no further extension of the strike A march 17 engine 4 with engineer eiley member of the brotherhood in good standing pulled out a freight train for san marcial this afternoon he gave as a reason that it was necessary for him to get home but as he had a chance to go yesterday and preferred to stay here this was not satisfactory to others the other engineers were all very indignant but no violence was offered tho road refuses to furnish anything for carrying mail except a box car and the mail clerk refused to go out with it saying it is impossible for them to handle mail in a car with no convenience for work the postmaster has referred the matter to the department but as his dispatch was sent after business hours it is probable no answer will bo received till monday and in the meantime no mail will go from this point all the coal gullup have shut down on the strike on the atlantic pacific the company not being able to furnish miners cannot dispose of the coal and work of all kind has been suspended aliis throws about of work and if the strike continues this part of the country will soon be suffering for fuel |
